Trump Escalates Canada Feud With AI-Generated Wall to ‘Filter’ Wildfire Smoke
President Donald Trump escalated his ongoing feud with Canada over wildfire smoke this weekend, sharing an AI-generated image of a massive air filtration wall along the U.S.-Canada border.
Trump posted the image to Truth Social on Saturday, July 25, showing a towering barrier fitted with what's labeled a "MERV 16 High Efficiency Particulate Air Filter," beneath a sign reading, "North America Air Filter Barrier. Clean Air. Clean Borders." The Canadian flag appears on one side of the structure, the American flag on the other.
The post came amid weeks of hazardous air quality across the U.S. as smoke from Canadian wildfires has drifted south. Nearly 860 wildfires were burning across Canada as of July 16, with more than 100 classified as out of control, according to Reuters. The fires have scorched more than 7.29 million acres so far this year, far surpassing the 10-year average of roughly 2.55 million acres, and prompted the evacuation of thousands of Canadians.
Trump's Ongoing Criticism of Canada
The AI-generated wall image is the latest in a string of public jabs Trump has directed at Canada over its handling of the fires. Speaking in the Oval Office on July 24, Trump told reporters, "We're going to put a big tariff on Canada because of the smoke," adding, "I told Canada they have to do something about it."
Earlier in July, Trump accused Canada of "willful negligence" in a Truth Social post, writing, "We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their Forests, and brush therein." He has also imposed 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods in recent weeks, a move economists have warned could raise costs and strain the two countries' economic relationship.
Canada Pushes Back
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has defended his country's wildfire response, pointing to the scale of the challenge facing Canadian firefighters. Speaking to the CBC, Carney described "the scale of the forest that Canada is blessed with, eight times the size of Texas," and noted that drought conditions have stretched from the equivalent of Texas all the way to Minnesota in American terms.
Canadian officials have also pointed to a long history of cross-border cooperation on wildfires, with firefighting personnel, aircraft and equipment routinely shared between the U.S. and Canada during severe fire seasons on either side of the border.
The White House and the office of Canada's prime minister have not responded to requests for further comment on Trump's latest post.
