Timing of Trump Purchase of UFC Stock Raises Eyebrows With White House Fight Ahead
The White House South Lawn looks a bit different these days. Construction on a giant fight cage has commenced on the famous stretch of grass in the nation's capital. Why is the cage being built, and why is it causing so much controversy? Let's take a look.
Timing of Trump Stock Purchase Sparks Controversy
President Donald Trump is planning to celebrate his birthday in a big way; however, it is already generating criticism from those on the left. It was recently reported that the president purchased between $15,001 and $50,000 of TKO Group Holdings stock in late March. This is significant, as it is the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Furthermore, the president is planning to host a UFC event at the White House on June 14 to celebrate his 80th birthday, raising eyebrows about the timing of the stock purchase.
The Huffington Post was the first media outlet to report that Trump purchased the TKO Group Holdings stock on March 25. It was July of 2025 that Trump announced that the White House would play host to the "UFC Freedom 250 event." In addition to the event commemorating the president's birthday, the fight is also part of the nation's semiquincentennial celebration.
The news of the stock purchase is raising red flags. Jordan Libowitz with the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington said that "Grifting has always been an issue in Donald Trump’s presidency, but now the mask is off.“ Libowitz went on to say that "Using the White House to promote a company whose stock you bought while promoting it is one of the worst conflicts of interest you could imagine. The agenda of this administration seems to start and stop with how to make Donald Trump richer.”
This sentiment was echoed by Norm Eisen, a former lawyer in the Barack Obama administration. Eisen said that “This extravagant waste of money and government time serves not only to distract from the real work the government does but now may result in a pecuniary benefit to the president. That is a far uglier White House spectacle than anything that the UFC will exhibit.”
Trump's adversaries have long criticized him for actively buying and selling millions of dollars in stock in interests that he is promoting. The president has also been criticized for purchasing and selling stocks in businesses that his team has helped through the use of favorable regulatory decisions or contract agreements.
Vice President JD Vance has defended his boss, saying that Trump does not decide what stocks to buy and sell. Instead, he has a team of financial advisers in charge of this task.
About the UFC Event
The president told reporters at the White House last month that despite being "involved in a lot of big events, I have never had an event that has had more interest than the UFC fight we have right at the front door." Trump has a reputation of being a big fan of the UFC franchise. He also remarked that “This will be the greatest show on Earth.”
UFC president and CEO Dana White told The New Yorker on May 25 that the president first approached him about the idea of a UFC event in connection with America's 250th birthday last year. White said that Trump floated the idea on a Saturday. On Monday, his team from the Oval Office began the process of setting up the logistics.
Construction on the cage began last week. Crews began raising the stage lights over the South Lawn on Memorial Day. It was just one day later that crews began the stage construction, changing the entire landscape of the White House. The Trump administration hosted some of the UFC fighters in the Oval Office on May 6. During the tour, the president unveiled the AI-generated images of the octagonal cage.
The event will seat a little over 4,000 people. The Trump administration will have 1,000 tickets to distribute. White and TKO Group executive chairman Ari Emanuel have each been provided with 200 tickets to give away. The different branches of the military will receive the remainder of the tickets.
The White House also confirmed that about 85,000 people will gather at the Ellipse Park's "UFC Freedom 250 Fan Fest" to watch the event at no cost. The main card will feature Ilia Topuria vs. Justin Gaethje in a lightweight title bout, slated to happen at 8 pm local time. Weigh-ins are scheduled to take place on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
