The man charged with assassinating Charlie Kirk appeared in a virtual court hearing for the first time on Tuesday afternoon. Here is a look at what transpired during the hearing, as well as what prosecutors are seeking.

Tyler Robinson Appears in First Court Hearing

The 22-year-old suspect accused of shooting and killing political pundit Charlie Kirk last week was formally charged with seven counts on Tuesday. Tyler Robinson appeared in the virtual hearing from his jail cell. Prosecutors detailed that they will seek the death penalty.

Robinson was charged with one count of aggravated murder, two counts of obstruction of justice and felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, two counts of witness tampering, and for the commission of a violent offense in the presence of a child. Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray announced the charges at a press conference on Tuesday.

The charging documents revealed that Robinson confessed through a series of text messages sent to his roommate following the shooting. The court documents also showed that Robinson's mother said that her son became more political in recent years, expressing "pro-gay and trans-rights" viewpoints. His mother also said that he had begun to date his roommate, a biological male who is in the process of transitioning genders.

When questioned via text message by his roommate why he shot Kirk, Robinson said that he "had enough of his hatred." Robinson told his roommate that the rifle used in the shooting belonged to his grandfather, expressing worry that the authorities would find prints on the weapon.

Robinson was charged with witness tampering after telling his roommate to delete the text messages and not to speak with law enforcement or the media.

Details About How Robinson Was Identified Released

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray also explained that it was Robinson's mother who identified her son as a possible suspect after authorities released photos of the alleged shooter. After seeing the photos and realizing that the suspect resembled her son, Robinson's mother showed the pictures to her husband.

The two confronted their son about where he was on the day of the shooting, convincing him to turn himself in once he allegedly admitted to the crime. Robinson's parents convinced him to go to the Washington County sheriff's office with them and a family friend to surrender one day after the shooting.

Also during Tuesday's hearing, Utah’s Fourth District Court Judge Tony Graf appointed an attorney to represent Robinson. Graf noted that he appointed the attorney after reviewing Robinson's financial situation and understanding that he could not afford the fees. The suspect will remain in custody without the possibility of bail. The next hearing date is set for Monday, September 29.

The judge in the case also granted a pre-trial protective order for Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk's widow. The order filed by Utah County prosecutors means that Robinson cannot attempt to contact Erika Kirk in any way.

Congressional Hearing About Probe Into Kirk's Murder

Also on Tuesday, FBI Director Kash Patel appeared on Capitol Hill in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee in Washington, D.C. Patel was asked extensively by lawmakers about the investigation into Kirk's assassination. The director told Congress that the FBI is in the process of interviewing over 20 people who allegedly participated in online chats with Robinson.

The questioning of Patel by Democrats turned contentious at times, including a fiery exchange with New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker. Patel was questioned about a number of issues, including his decision to prematurely and inaccurately announce that the FBI had a suspect in custody. Patel was also grilled on his handling of the Epstein files, as well as his purge of senior staff members within the FBI.

Several of the GOP lawmakers expressed their confidence in how Patel and the FBI are handling the investigation. President Donald Trump also praised Patel for his handling of the investigation. When speaking with reporters on the White House lawn before departing for his state visit to the United Kingdom, Trump lauded the FBI and dismissed the scrutiny directed at the agency and Patel as of late.
