A man rammed a truck into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, on Thursday afternoon, triggering a shootout with security that left the suspect dead. One security guard was injured. No congregants or children were harmed.

What Happened

The suspect drove around security bollards and crashed his truck through the front doors of the synagogue shortly after midday on March 12, 2026. After breaching the entrance, he continued driving the vehicle down a hallway inside the building. The truck caught fire upon impact.

A security guard was struck by the vehicle and knocked unconscious. A second guard engaged the suspect with gunfire. The suspect died at the scene. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard did not confirm the exact cause of the suspect's death but confirmed there was no active threat to the community.

Authorities are searching the truck for explosive devices as a precaution. Investigators had not publicly identified the suspect or confirmed a motive as of Thursday afternoon.

About Temple Israel

Temple Israel, located at 5725 Walnut Lake Road near the intersection of Walnut Lake and Drake roads, is the largest Reform synagogue in the United States. Founded in 1941, it was the first synagogue established in Metro Detroit. The congregation includes approximately 3,500 member families, or roughly 12,000 individual congregants.

West Bloomfield Township has a population of just over 66,000 and sits less than 30 miles from downtown Detroit. The broader Metro Detroit area is home to approximately 71,000 Jewish residents, making it one of the largest Jewish communities in the country.

Law Enforcement Response

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including West Bloomfield police, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, Michigan State Police, and units from Plymouth, Bloomfield Hills, and Farmington Hills. Medics and tactical teams were also deployed.

Sheriff Bouchard said that in the weeks prior to the attack, local law enforcement had been in regular contact with religious institutions and schools throughout Oakland County. Security personnel at Temple Israel had been briefed by police. "There was no specific chatter about any institution or facility in Oakland County but they were all on alert," Bouchard said.

Students at the temple's school were evacuated and reunited with parents at a nearby Jewish Community Center. Several area schools, including West Bloomfield High School and West Bloomfield Middle School, were placed in secure mode during the police response.

Community Reaction

The Jewish Federation of Detroit said it was aware of the incident and that Jewish agencies in the area moved into precautionary lockdown. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called the attack heartbreaking, saying Michigan's Jewish community deserves to practice its faith in peace and that antisemitism and violence have no place in the state.

Michigan State Police urged residents to stay away from the area and announced increased patrols at other places of worship across the region. The Ann Arbor Police Department also directed officers to increase presence at local houses of worship and schools. In New York City, the NYPD said it was deploying additional officers to synagogues and Jewish institutions out of caution.

A congregation member speaking with local television from outside the building described the mood as one of shock and fear. Other Jewish congregations across Michigan said they were taking extra security precautions in the aftermath.
