Oklahoma Senate Candidate Barry Christian Found Dead Inside Pickup Truck
Oklahoma Republicans were confronted with tragedy Thursday when Barry Christian, 54, a drilling consultant and candidate for Senate District 38, was found dead inside his truck after being reported missing the day before. He had last been seen in his hometown of Sayre, Oklahoma, on Tuesday. No cause of death has been released.
How He Was Found
Christian was reported missing on Wednesday, April 29, after failing to appear for a scheduled meeting. Sayre police asked the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to take over the case. The following morning, at approximately 9:45 a.m., Beckham County deputies located Christian's Dodge Ram pickup truck in the Sandy Sanders Wildlife Management Area south of Erick — a small town of about 1,000 residents roughly 20 minutes from Sayre. A body found inside the truck was identified as Christian.
Christian's remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause and manner of death. As of Thursday, the OSBI said in a statement that "the circumstances surrounding Mr. Christian's death remain under investigation."
Who Was Barry Christian?
Christian was born and raised in Sayre, the county seat of Beckham County in western Oklahoma. He was not a career politician. Before running for office, he spent 35 years in the petroleum industry, working as a drilling consultant and drilling superintendent.
He entered the SD 38 Republican primary alongside two other candidates. In a campaign video posted to social media, he framed his appeal around his identity as a small-town Oklahoman. "I'm running because I believe our communities deserve a voice that listens, works hard and puts people ahead of politics," he said. He pledged to focus on education, workforce development, public safety, agriculture, and rural opportunity — and said he was running without big corporate donors, relying instead on local supporters.
His campaign website outlined more explicitly conservative positions, including opposition to what he called "leftist government overreach," strong support for law enforcement, and opposition to abortion.
Family and Community Respond
Christian's daughter, Brooklyn Christian, asked the public to treat his memory carefully as the family processes what happened. "Our world is upside down right now. We are still not sure of everything that happened, so please act with grace and treat my dad's legacy with dignity," she said in a statement.
Farrah Christian, a former partner who shared children with him, paid tribute on Facebook. "We had lots of ups and downs, twists and turns, and even though we didn't end up together, we always stayed close, and we have the most beautiful children and grandchildren who you loved so deeply," she wrote. "I just don't know how we are supposed to live without you."
Joe Buchanan, a fellow Republican running against Christian in the SD 38 primary, said he was "devastated to hear about Barry Christian's passing" and asked for prayers for the family. Republican state Senate candidate Heather Boss also shared a tribute, writing that Christian was "more than a name on a ballot" and that "a life has been lost. A family is grieving. A community is mourning."
Investigation Ongoing
OSBI crime scene technicians were on site Thursday afternoon. The agency has not publicly identified any suspects or specified the manner of death as the investigation continues. The sudden death has left the SD 38 race — and the small western Oklahoma community it serves — in a state of profound uncertainty.
Christian is survived by his children and grandchildren. His death remains under investigation.
