Nampa Mayor Rick Hogaboam died following a medical emergency on Wednesday evening at Eagle City Hall. He was 47 years old. The Treasure Valley Partnership, a coalition of mayors and county commissioners, was hosting its second Regional Town Hall when Hogaboam collapsed around 6:45 p.m., midway through the event.

Hogaboam had been speaking at the town hall when he began to slur his speech and collapsed. The city of Nampa confirmed his death in a statement later that night, asking the community to "keep his family and loved ones in your prayers during this incredibly difficult time."

Immediate Response

Eagle Mayor Brad Pike, a former firefighter who was seated to Hogaboam's right, immediately noticed what was happening and began administering CPR. He was joined by the Eagle Police Chief, who was also attending the event. TVP staff called 911, and the room was cleared as first responders arrived.

The Ada County Coroner released the cause of death for Nampa Mayor Hogaboam on Thursday evening, reporting he died of a cardiac tamponade. Cardiac tamponade occurs when fluid builds up in the sac surrounding the heart, compressing it and preventing it from pumping blood effectively. The condition can cause sudden collapse and is often fatal without immediate medical intervention.

Pike later reflected on the moment in a local news interview. "The need was to take care of Rick and he got immediate support," he said. "Good, bad or indifferent, I was the last person in his life that was touching him when he passed." He called it a "tragic loss" for all who had the opportunity to work alongside Hogaboam.

A Career Built on Public Service

Hogaboam was just three months into his first term as Nampa's mayor after being elected in November 2025. He replaced former Mayor Debbie Kling, who opted not to run for a third term and had publicly endorsed Hogaboam — her former chief of staff — as her successor. He won the election with 62.9 percent of the vote among four candidates.

Prior to his election as mayor, Hogaboam served as Canyon County Clerk and as a Nampa city councilman. He also briefly served as a substitute Idaho State Senator in 2021 and was previously a senior pastor at Sovereign Grace Fellowship in Nampa. His official city biography described him as a husband, father, grandfather, and avid baseball fan who envisioned Nampa as a place where families could thrive.

Leadership Transition

City Council President David Bills is serving as acting mayor until an interim mayor can be appointed ahead of a new mayoral election in November. Under Idaho State Code, the Nampa City Council is responsible for appointing someone to serve as mayor until that election takes place.

Outpouring of Condolences

Tributes poured in from across Idaho following news of Hogaboam's death. Idaho Governor Brad Little called it "heartbreaking," noting that Hogaboam "served with a real heart for public service and dedication to the community."

Former Mayor Kling said she was "extremely grieved" by the news. "Rick was such a smart, talented leader, who will be greatly missed," she said.

The Treasure Valley Partnership described Hogaboam as "an exemplary public servant, a dedicated family man, and a true friend." The Caldwell Police Department called him a "pillar of the community" who dedicated his life to public service. Idaho Superintendent of Public Instruction Debbie Critchfield noted that Hogaboam had visited her office just one week before his death, accompanied by youth from his mayor's council.

His passing marks the second Treasure Valley mayor to die in 2026, leaving a deep void in a city he had only just begun to lead.
