Graham Platner advanced in the Maine Democratic Senate primary this week, setting up a showdown with incumbent Sen. Susan Collins. While Platner was originally predicted to win the primary, the recent revelation of his past behavior put that in question heading into Tuesday's election. Here is a closer look at Platner and a preview of the race ahead.

Platner Cruises to Victory in Maine Democratic Primary

Platner had been in the hot seat heading into Tuesday's primary election in Maine. Several of Platner's ex-girlfriends have come out in recent weeks with allegations that he was violent and verbally abusive. In addition, it was also revealed that Platner authored Reddit posts that were critical of law enforcement authorities and has a tattoo that resembles a Nazi sign.

Despite the controversies, Platner cruised to victory in the election. Although votes are still being counted, it looks as if Platner is going to easily win the election with about 75% of the primary voters' support.

The progressive populist will go up against Collins in November's midterm election. The Democrats have been eyeing Maine as a possible seat that they can flip this fall. The 73-year-old Republican senator Collins is seeking a sixth term. The incumbent is distinguished by her moderate views that have often sent her to vote with the Democrats.

In a victory speech late Tuesday, Platner briefly spoke about the concerns that have infiltrated his campaign. He paid credit to his wife and said that if voters believe that we can change the country, they should also believe that people can change. Platner delivered his speech at a YMCA in his small hometown community of Blue Hill.

Democrats are aiming to flip four GOP seats this November. However, Collins will likely continue to prove to be a formidable opponent. The Senate Leadership Fund has already said that they are going to support Collins this year, noting that she has proven her “strong character, steady leadership, and unmatched effectiveness, Graham Platner is a dangerous deviant who cannot be trusted to represent the Pine Tree State."

Republican leaders are cautioning their base that it is going to be a tough race. A new memo from the National Republican Senatorial Committee warned that the political fundamentals in Maine “remain challenging and it is a fatal mistake to assume Platner is too damaged to win.”

Platner did not shy away from going after Collins in his victory speech. In the address that almost certainly serves as a preview of his campaign, Platner called Collins "spineless and corrupt." He also took the opportunity to point out that Collins frequently votes with Trump, including her decision to confirm controversial Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

The Democratic nominee also brought up Collins' voting record on abortion rights, pointing out that she had promised to protect Roe v. Wade but instead confirmed a justice who overturned it. In addition to tying Collins to Trump, Platner is also connecting her to what he called the "Epstein class."

Democratic Leaders Still Not on Board with Platner

Although Tuesday's vote was a strong signal that Maine Democratic voters are not holding Platner's past against him, the national Democratic Party has been more hesitant. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee released a statement from Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand that did not offer praise of Platner. Instead, the statement simply criticized Collins.

Progressive New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told CNN on Tuesday that she found the allegations against Platner "hard to stomach." However, Ocasio-Cortez also acknowledged that she did not think the voters of Maine are as concerned with Platner's past when compared to those in Washington, D.C.

California Sen. Adam Schiff met with Platner last week as all of the allegations were coming to light. When asked if he thinks Platner was being truthful in his promises to continue with a viable campaign, Schiff only said that he was going to "take some time to digest it." Schiff went on to say that it is up to the voters of Maine.

Notably, Platner has retained the staunch support of Sen. Bernie Sanders. The long-time Vermont senator was one of Platner's earliest supporters, and has continued to back his fellow progressive cohort in New England.

About Graham Platner

Platner is a relative newcomer on the national stage. He is most distinguished as a veteran of both the Marine Corps and the Army National Guard, serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Platner has endeared himself to many Maine voters for being a former oyster farmer who resonates with Maine's populist viewpoints.

When it comes to policies, Platner is decidedly progressive. On the domestic front, he stands for universal healthcare and protecting the rights of women. Platner has also been an advocate for more investment in affordable housing. By branding himself as a working-class candidate, Platner has been vocal about the need to strengthen labor unions and workers' rights while reducing the influence that corporations and billionaires have on national politics. Platner has also been extremely critical of Trump, particularly for his hawkish war involvement.

The one thing that is certain is that the Senate race in Maine is going to be one of the most closely watched battles heading into the midterm cycle. Stay tuned as we continue to follow all of the happenings on the campaign trail.
