If you recently treated yourself to a little fancy cheese from Whole Foods, it's time to check your fridge.

They’re recalling their Cabricharme cheese sold in seven states because it contains an egg protein that isn't listed on the label.

That's an important omission for anyone with an egg allergy, so you’ll want to take a closer look before you start creating your next charcuterie board.

Whole Foods Recalls Cheese Over Egg Allergen Risk

The Whole Foods cheese recall of 2026 involves Fromagerie Coop de Mean Cabricharme cheese sold in the specialty cheese department.

According to the FDA recall notice, the cheese contains egg lysozyme, a protein from egg whites that wasn't declared on the product label.

For people with an egg allergy or severe sensitivity, eating the recalled cheese could cause a serious or potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

Thankfully, no illnesses were reported when the recall was announced.

Check Your Cheese for These Details

The Whole Foods Cabricharme recall covers two labels, so you’ll need to do a little more than look for the name Cabricharme.

The affected cheese was cut, wrapped in plastic by the pound, and given Whole Foods Market scale labels.

Check your package for:

  • Fromagerie Coop de Mean Cabricharme Raw Milk – Aged 60 Days: PLU 57953, with best-by dates through and including October 7, 2026

  • Belgian Cabricharme: PLU 54670, with best-by dates through and including October 7, 2026

Whole Foods says the affected cheese has already been removed from the shelves.

Still, those October best-by dates mean a wedge could still be waiting patiently in someone's refrigerator.

Which States Are Included in the Recall?

If you're wondering about the Whole Foods recall and which states are involved, the cheese was sold in 18 stores in seven states:

  • Arizona

  • California

  • Connecticut

  • Massachusetts

  • New Jersey

  • New York

  • Rhode Island

There’s one distinction, however, depending on which cheese you purchased.

The Fromagerie Coop de Mean Cabricharme with PLU 57953 was sold in California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

The Belgian Cabricharme with PLU 54670 was only sold in Arizona and California.

Why Is Egg in Cheese?

Egg probably isn't the first ingredient we'd expect to see in a wedge of cheese.

But, this egg lysozyme cheese recall involves a protein derived from egg whites.

And the problem isn't that it's present. It's that the egg wasn't declared on the label.

Whole Foods says a store team member discovered the labeling problem, which led to the recall.

What to Do if You Bought the Cheese

The instructions for this FDA cheese recall over an egg allergy are refreshingly straightforward.

Don't eat the affected cheese.

Whole Foods says customers don't need to bring the product back to the store. Instead, they’re asking people to dispose of it.

Full refunds are available with a valid receipt.

If you have any questions, you can also contact Whole Foods at 1-844-936-8255 from 7 am to 10 pm CT Monday through Friday, and 8 am to 6 pm CT on weekends.

Give Your Cheese Drawer a Quick Check

No illnesses have been reported, and Whole Foods has already removed the affected products from the stores.

But, that doesn't necessarily mean the cheese is out of our kitchens.

If you've recently visited a Whole Foods specialty cheese counter in one of the seven affected states, take a quick look at the label before digging in.

A minute spent checking a PLU is considerably less disruptive than discovering an undeclared allergen the hard way.
