Saturah Hayes was 17 years old. She was dressed for prom. She was standing in a park in Brownsville, Tennessee, taking photos with classmates — part of a tradition Haywood High School students had observed for years — when gunfire erupted on Friday night, May 8. She was shot. She was taken to a hospital. She did not survive.

Four other people were also struck by gunfire at Webb Banks Park that evening. One remains in critical condition. No arrests have been announced. The Class of 2026 at Haywood High School — the class Saturah belonged to — will not have their prom night back.

What Happened

Brownsville police responded to Webb Banks Passive Park on the evening of May 8 after reports of a disturbance. Students had gathered there, as they do every year before prom, to take photos in their formal attire. Witnesses say more than 100 students and vehicles were at the park when the shooting broke out. Early indications from investigators suggest multiple groups may have been involved, and authorities are exploring the possibility of a drive-by shooting.

Five people were transported to nearby hospitals with gunshot wounds. Saturah Hayes, later identified by Haywood County Schools Superintendent Amie Marsh, died from her injuries. One other victim remains in critical condition. Three others were treated for injuries.

Prom was ended early. Classes across Haywood County Schools were canceled on Monday, May 11 to give students, families, faculty, and staff time to grieve.

Who Saturah Hayes Was

Superintendent Marsh released a statement describing the teenager who died.

"She was a hardworking student with a positive attitude," Marsh said. "She was full of potential and promise with hopes and plans for the future that will now remain unrealized."

On Mother's Day, the day after the shooting, hundreds of Brownsville residents lined the streets outside the courthouse as a hearse carrying Saturah's casket passed through downtown. Family members, friends, classmates, and local leaders stood together in silence. Teachers spoke of faith and resilience. The community that had gathered in that park to celebrate its graduating seniors was now gathering to say goodbye to one of them.

Patrick Holmes, a neighbor of the park, summed up what many were feeling. "I didn't know her, but I think my daughter was a friend of hers," he said. "It's just senseless to me. Kids should be able to enjoy themselves, especially at a time like prom — the last year of high school and all those memories."

The Investigation

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is leading a multi-agency investigation into the shooting. As of Sunday evening, no suspects had been identified and no arrests had been made. Officials are urging anyone with information, photos, or videos connected to the shooting to come forward.

Brownsville Mayor William D. Rawls released a statement Saturday morning. "Last night's tragedy was senseless and heartbreaking. What was supposed to be a memorable and joyful night for the Class of 2026 was taken away by reckless gun violence. No family, student, or member of our community should ever have to experience this kind of pain during a time that should be filled with celebration and hope."

A Tradition That Turned Deadly

Webb Banks Park had long been considered a safe gathering place before prom. Former Haywood High student Emma Milton said students have gathered there every year for as long as she can remember. "It should have been a very safe place for them," she said.

That tradition is now inseparable from what happened there on May 8, 2026. A 17-year-old girl in her prom dress, standing in a park full of her classmates, was shot and killed. The investigation continues. The community is grieving. And the Class of 2026 at Haywood High School will carry the memory of this night for the rest of their lives.
