Dayton Webber, 27, a professional cornhole player who made history as the first quadruple amputee to compete in the American Cornhole League, has been arrested on suspicion of shooting and killing a passenger in his car during an argument. The victim, Bradrick Wells, 27, was found dead in a yard in Maryland early Monday morning.

What Happened

According to the Charles County Sheriff's Office in suburban Washington, D.C., Webber was driving with Wells in the front seat at approximately 10:25 p.m. Sunday when the two began arguing in front of other passengers in the vehicle.

Webber allegedly shot Wells, then pulled over in the community of La Plata and asked the other passengers to help him remove the body from the car. They refused, got out, and fled the scene. Webber then drove away with Wells' body still in the vehicle.

Two witnesses who said they saw the shooting flagged down officers on patrol and reported what had happened, triggering a search for Webber.

Body Discovered, Suspect Found in Virginia

A few hours later, a resident of nearby Charlotte Hall, Maryland, called investigators to report a body in their yard. Investigators confirmed the remains were those of Wells.

Authorities located Webber's car approximately 150 miles away in Charlottesville, Virginia, and tracked him to a nearby hospital where he had sought treatment for an unspecified medical issue. The Albemarle County Police Department arrested Webber as a fugitive upon his discharge.

Charles County sheriff's deputies said they planned to book Webber on charges of murder, assault and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony once he is transferred to their custody. A statement of charges filed in court alleged Webber shot Wells twice in the head. Investigators noted that Webber, Wells and the other passengers were all known to each other, but no motive has been publicly established.

The sheriff's office has not specified how investigators believe Webber was able to fire a weapon while driving. A search warrant for his vehicle had not yet been served at the time of initial reporting. However, a video posted to a YouTube account under Webber's name showed him loading and firing a pistol.

From Near-Death to Pro Athlete

Webber's arrest drew widespread attention in part because of his extraordinary backstory.

At 10 months old, Webber contracted a severe bacterial infection so serious that he was given last rites. He survived following the amputation of both legs and lower arms and a months-long hospital stay. He went on to become a wrestler and football player despite not having hands or feet — a story ESPN first covered in 2010.

Webber eventually narrowed his focus to cornhole and signed a professional contract in 2021. He was later drafted into the American Cornhole League, becoming its first quadruple amputee competitor. He went on to win multiple tournaments.

In 2023, ESPN's SC Featured profiled Webber in a segment highlighting his journey. "Something I've been doing my whole life is overcoming things that people didn't think I could," he said. Asked what he wanted people to take from his life, Webber said: "If you put your mind to it, anything is possible. The world won't wait."

That same year, he published an essay describing the moment his team erased a 16-point deficit to win a state cornhole championship. "I knew I could make it as a pro," he wrote. "It felt amazing to go from underdog to winner."

ESPN SportsCenter featured Webber on one of its top 10 plays segments, showing him sink four consecutive cornhole shots — including a bank shot on the final attempt.

A relative of Wells declined to comment.
