James Farthing's fortunes took a dramatic turn just days after celebrating a life-changing $167.3 million Powerball win. The 50-year-old Kentucky resident was arrested at a Florida resort following an alleged altercation that left a sheriff's deputy injured.

Biggest Jackpot in State History

On April 26, Farthing purchased a $2 Powerball ticket at Clark's Pump N Shop in Georgetown, Kentucky. The ticket matched all five white balls and the Powerball, securing the largest jackpot in the state's history. Farthing and his mother, Linda Grizzle, split the winnings, choosing between a lump sum of $77.3 million or 30 graduated annual payments.

In a press release from the Kentucky Lottery, Grizzle expressed relief, stating, "This is going to pay off my debt." Farthing, acknowledging past missteps, told WKYT-TV, "I've caused a lot of stress on her... God's been good because I've kept my faith and done right."

Celebration Turns to Confrontation

The celebratory mood was short-lived. On April 29, while staying at the TradeWinds Resort in St. Pete Beach, Florida, Farthing allegedly became involved in a physical altercation with another guest. According to an arrest affidavit, Farthing punched the guest during an argument.

When Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies arrived to intervene, Farthing reportedly kicked one deputy in the face, causing visible swelling and redness under the officer's right eye. Farthing then attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended shortly thereafter.

Farthing's girlfriend, 42-year-old Jacqueline Fightmaster, was also present during the incident. She was arrested for charges of disorderly intoxication after allegedly yelling incoherently and attempting to fight other patrons at the bar.

Legal Repercussions

Farthing faces multiple charges— including felony battery on a law enforcement officer, misdemeanor battery, and resisting arrest. He is being held without bond due to a parole violation stemming from previous convictions in Kentucky, which include theft, receiving stolen property, and drug offenses.

Fightmaster was released after posting bond. Hotel staff at the TradeWinds Resort have indicated their intention to press charges related to the incident.

Jackpot to Jail Cell

What should have been the best week of James Farthing’s life took a sharp and unexpected turn. One moment, he was holding a Powerball ticket worth $167 million. Days later, he was in handcuffs.

It’s not the kind of post-jackpot story anyone expects — but it’s a real one. For now, the jackpot winner is facing something far less glamorous than riches: the reality of a courtroom.
