Popular Hair Mousse Recalled For Explosion Risk After Customer Injury

Check your bathroom cabinet if you use Schwarzkopf Professional mousse.

Henkel Corporation is voluntarily recalling certain batches of Schwarzkopf Professional Osis Grip Extra Strong Mousse — the 6.76-ounce aluminum can — after identifying a packaging defect that could cause the aerosol can to leak and potentially explode under pressure. The FDA posted the announcement August 11.

One customer has already been hurt. A person reported bruising to their hand from one of the affected cans. Two salons also reported issues. No other injuries have been identified so far.

Is Your Can Affected?

The recall is specific to certain batch codes printed on the back of the can. Only the 6.76-ounce size is involved — no other Schwarzkopf products are included. If your batch code isn't on the list, your product is safe.

The recalled mousse was sold in Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Washington — distributed to both hair salons and retail consumers.

Why Aerosol Cans Are Genuinely Dangerous When Something Goes Wrong

Most people have used aerosol products their entire lives without incident — and that's because aerosol packaging, when it works correctly, is remarkably safe. But understanding what's actually inside that can helps explain why a defect is serious.

Aerosol cans are pressurized containers holding both the product and a propellant — typically a compressed gas or liquefied gas that pushes the product out when you press the nozzle. The aluminum casing is specifically engineered to contain that pressure safely within a defined range. When the seal or the can wall has a defect, that pressure has nowhere to go except out through the weak point — fast.

A leaking aerosol can build up pressure around a compromised seal. If that pressure exceeds what the can wall can contain, it doesn't just spray — it can rupture. An aerosol can rupturing unexpectedly in your hand, in a drawer, or on a bathroom shelf generates significant force. The person who reported hand bruising in this recall got lucky. A can rupturing near someone's face or eye would be a different situation entirely.

The risk increases with heat — aerosol cans stored in hot cars, near heating vents, or in direct sunlight are under more pressure than cans at room temperature. If you have any of the affected batch codes, don't leave the can in a warm environment while you figure out the return process. Get it out of the house.

Henkel says it has received a total of three reports — one consumer and two salons — before initiating the recall. That suggests the defect rate is relatively low across the production run, but low rate doesn't mean zero risk when the potential outcome is an exploding pressurized container.
