Volkswagen Group of America recalled more than 27,000 Audi vehicles because seat belt locks might not work right, which could seriously injure kids in car seats.

The automaker recalled 27,768 Audi vehicles on December 19 because the seatbelt automatic locking retractors may fail to engage when a child seat is installed, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report. It doesn't comply with two Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

An internal audit in September caught the seat belt malfunction. By December 17, the Audi Product Safety Committee decided it warranted a recall.

All models recalled are 2025. Here's the breakdown:

  • 2025 Audi SQ6 E-Tron, about 14 affected.

  • 2025 Audi SQ6 Sportback E-Tron, about 62 affected.

  • 2025 Audi Q6 Sportback E-Tron, about 220 affected.

  • 2025 Audi A6, about 1,968 affected.

  • 2025 Audi A5, about 12,571 affected. That's the big one.

  • 2025 Audi A6 Sportback E-Tron, about 3,348 affected.

  • 2025 Audi Q6 E-Tron, about 5,857 affected.

  • 2025 Audi S5, about 2,848 affected.

  • 2025 Audi S6 Sportback E-Tron, about 880 affected.

Only about 3% of the vehicles actually have the defect. Most are fine.

What to Do If You Own One

Owner notification letters are expected by February 17, 2026. Dealers will inspect the seatbelt retractors and replace them free if necessary.

Call Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834 for more information. The recall number is 69D8. You can search VINs on the NHTSA website to see if yours is affected.

What It Comes Down To

Seat belt locks failing when a child seat is installed is serious. If you own a 2025 Audi, check if your VIN is on the list. Wait for the letter by mid-February or call now. Dealers fix it for free if your vehicle has the defect.

It’s not a massive recall compared to some. But seat belt failures involving child seats aren't something to mess around with.
