Monday’s Manhattan Shooting Leaves 4 Dead, Including NYPD Officer
A mass shooting at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening claimed at least four lives—including an off-duty NYPD officer—and injured others before the gunman took his own life, officials confirmed.
Tragedy at High-Rise Lobby
According to the NYPD, the assailant entered the lobby of a 34-story office tower on East 52nd Street, armed with an M4-style rifle, around 6:30 p.m. He opened fire, fatally shooting off-duty Officer Didarul Islam, who was working in security detail for a corporate tenant of the building. The gunman then continued, shooting three additional people, two in the lobby and one on the 33rd floor, before ultimately shooting himself.
Victims and Casualties
Officer Islam, a 36-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant with over three years on the force, was known as a dedicated public servant and father expecting a third child. Also among the deceased was a Blackstone Group executive, one civilian on the lobby floor, and another on the 33rd floor. A fifth civilian victim remains in critical condition but is expected to survive.
The Gunman: A Lone Shooter
Law enforcement identified the gunman as Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old resident of Las Vegas. Tamura reportedly drove cross-country and entered the building alone. After opening fire, he made his way to the 33rd floor, where he died from a self-inflicted gunshot.
Authorities confirmed that Tamura acted alone and had no confirmed motive. A note found in his car mentioned CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) and criticized the NFL, though investigators said there is no indication the league was a direct target.
Heroic Response
The 345 Park Avenue tower houses high-profile tenants, including the NFL, Blackstone, and KPMG, raising concerns for corporate safety in Midtown Manhattan. Scenes inside the building included terrified office workers barricading doors with furniture, while others fled via stairwells or hid in conference rooms.
One witness, Jessica Chen, described hearing rapid gunfire around her conference room before colleagues used tables to block themselves into a safe area. “I texted my parents ‘I love them,’” she said.
Official Response
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch declared the shooter “neutralized” and said the scene was under control within minutes of the police’s arrival. FBI agents were later called in to support the investigation and assist with evidence gathering. Officials noted that none of the building’s occupants appeared to be the intended targets of the attack.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell released statements honoring the victims and pledging support to affected employees. Goodell said the NFL will increase building security and urged employees to work remotely in the coming days.
