Michigan Church Shooting Leaves 2 Dead, 8 Injured; Suspect Dead After Police Confrontation
At least two people are dead and eight more hospitalized after a mass shooting Sunday morning at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan.
Authorities say the incident began around 10:25 a.m. when a 40-year-old man from Burton drove his vehicle into the front doors of the church before opening fire with an assault rifle on hundreds of worshipers.
Victims and Hospital Response
Police confirmed 10 victims were transported to hospitals with gunshot wounds, two of whom have since died. Several others remain in critical condition. Henry Ford Health confirmed that nine patients are being treated at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital, where counselors and spiritual care are available.
Suspect and Police Response
The suspect died after exchanging gunfire with officers from Grand Blanc Township police and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Investigators said the attacker also deliberately set a fire inside the church. The blaze has since been contained.
Community and Official Response
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer called the attack “unacceptable” and thanked first responders.
FBI Director Kash Patel said more than 100 FBI agents are assisting on scene.
President Trump called the shooting “another targeted attack on Christians,” pledging federal support.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem also condemned the attack.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement expressing gratitude for prayers and support, saying, “Places of worship are meant to be sanctuaries of peacemaking, prayer and connection. We pray for peace and healing for all involved.”
Reunification and Counseling
Authorities have set up a reunification center at a nearby movie theater on Trillium Circle Avenue. Anyone seeking loved ones should call the American Red Cross at 248-705-7352. Counseling services will also be available at the Grand Blanc Township Police Department this week.
Officials emphasize that there is no ongoing threat to the community. More updates are expected at a 5 p.m. press conference.
