McDonald's Monopoly Is Back — With Peel Pieces, a $1 Million Grand Prize, and One Big Change
The game pieces are back. The peeling is back. The scramble to find Boardwalk is back.
McDonald's Monopoly returns October 6 and runs through November 1, bringing back the physical peel-off stickers that made the game iconic when it launched nearly 40 years ago in 1987. The grand prize is $1 million in cash. You need to be a McDonald's Rewards member to play, and all gameplay runs through the app this year — but the tactile part everyone actually remembers is back on the packaging.
"MONOPOLY at McDonald's is more than just a game. It's about childhood memories, family moments and surprises that make our day," said Alyssa Buetikofer, McDonald's USA's chief marketing and customer experience officer. "This year, we're giving fans even more reasons to play with a simpler digital game experience, more rewards and bigger prizes, all with the classic peel."
How It Works
Order an eligible menu item, peel the sticker off the packaging, and scan it in the app. Each game piece reveals one of four outcomes — instant-win free food, instant-win Rewards points, a property piece to collect toward bigger prizes, or a Chance Card play.
Instant-win food prizes include McChicken sandwiches, Snack Wraps, McGriddles, shakes, smoothies, and small fries. Instant-win points range from 1,500 to 7,000 MyMcDonald's Rewards points. Collect the right property combinations and you can win a Carnival Cruise vacation, a trip to Kennedy Space Center, a 2027 Jeep Cherokee, or vehicles from Polaris. The Chance Card game adds gift cards from Grubhub, Ulta Beauty, and other brands.
The $1 million cash prize — same as it's been since the game launched — still requires the classic winning combination: both dark blue properties, Park Place and Boardwalk.
Eligible menu items span breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Quarter Pounder with Cheese, Egg McMuffin, large fries, large hot and cold drinks, Hash Browns, Big Macs, 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, and four-piece McCrispy Strips all qualify.
The One Big Change
All gameplay is now handled entirely through the app — you peel the physical sticker, but you scan it in and track everything digitally. No more losing paper game boards. No more family arguments about who had which property. Your pieces live in the app and you can see exactly what you're missing to complete a set.
This also means you need the McDonald's app downloaded and a Rewards account active to participate. Pre-registration for the game is already open.
No purchase necessary to play — but the process for getting a free game piece has changed. You now have to mail in a request with a self-addressed stamped envelope to receive one piece by mail. Mail-in requests must be sent no sooner than September 22 and received no later than November 2.
The History Behind the Hype
McDonald's Monopoly has a complicated legacy that goes well beyond nostalgia. The game ran nearly continuously from its 1987 launch until 2001, when a massive fraud scandal came to light — a security consultant named Jerome Jacobson had been systematically stealing the top prize pieces and selling them for cash. More than $24 million in fraudulent prizes were distributed over a decade before the FBI caught up with him. The case was later the subject of an HBO documentary series.
McDonald's revived the game in 2003, but it went on hiatus in 2016 before returning last year. Last year's return was the first time the peel pieces came back in nearly a decade, and the 2026 version doubles down on that format while cleaning up the experience with digital tracking.
Park Place and Boardwalk ending up in the same person's hands this October is statistically unlikely — but that's been true for 39 years and it hasn't slowed anyone down yet.
