Hot Pockets Ditched Its Crisping Sleeve, and the Internet Is in Mourning
"I can't believe I have to raise my kids in this pocketless world."
That comment hit the TikTok section of a video posted by Luis Acosta in August, after he opened a box of Hot Pockets and found something deeply wrong with the universe. There was no sleeve. Just a bare Hot Pocket, naked and unsupported, staring back at him from the box.
"I know we're in an economic crisis right now, because I just got a thing of Hot Pockets, and they don't even come with the 'pocket' anymore, just with the 'hot,'" he said — then chucked the sleeveless Hot Pocket directly into the microwave without a plate, as a statement.
The video blew up. The comments section became a grief support group. One person mentioned their dad called the company to complain. Several others admitted they had no idea this had happened. A few expressed concern about what this means for the children.
This Is Actually Old News
Here's the thing: this wasn't recent. Nestlé quietly phased out the crisping sleeve starting in June 2024. They even ran a whole marketing campaign about it in September 2024 — introduced a limited-edition holiday sweater with zip-off sleeves as a cheeky farewell. The brand published an explainer page on its recipe website called "Why Sleeveless."
The internet just didn't get the memo until this summer.
What the Sleeve Actually Did
The cardboard sleeve wasn't just packaging. It was a piece of microwave engineering with its own name: a susceptor.
The sleeve was lined with a thin metallic film — a material that absorbs microwave energy and converts it to heat faster than the food does. The result was that the outside of the Hot Pocket got exposed to concentrated direct heat, crisping the crust, while the microwave continued cooking the interior. Without it, a microwaved Hot Pocket gets hot all the way through but misses that exterior crispness that the sleeve was specifically designed to create.
Hot Pockets says it reformulated the recipe to compensate. The brand claims the new version crisps adequately on its own and points to revised cooking instructions as the workaround — specifically, recommending an air fryer for anyone who wants real crispness. Microwaving the sleeve-free version is now officially described as producing a "softer sandwich."
The brand is also dangling a consolation prize: new Pepperoni Pizza Hot Pockets now contain 30% more pepperoni than the previous recipe. Whether more filling compensates for soggier crust is a matter of personal values.
Why This Feels Like More Than Just a Sleeve
Nestlé said eliminating the sleeve saves an estimated 3,300 tons of waste annually — enough material to wrap around the world twice, according to the company. That's a real number and a genuine environmental improvement.
But the internet's reaction to this news — grief, betrayal, calls to companies, TikTok eulogies — isn't really about the sleeve itself. It's about the pattern. The sleeve joins a long list of things that used to be part of a product experience and quietly disappeared: the scent of Play-Doh, the size of a Cadbury bar, the crunch of a Cheeto that somehow just doesn't hit the same.
Critics are calling it “enshittification” — the gradual, incremental degradation of a product's quality or experience as companies find ways to reduce costs or environmental impact while maintaining prices. Whether the Hot Pocket without a sleeve is objectively wrong is debatable, particularly since it indeed reduces waste. Whether it feels like something was taken away is apparently not debatable at all.
"My dad was so mad he called the company and complained," one commenter wrote.
That's the sleeve's legacy. A piece of metallic cardboard that inspired one dad to pick up the phone and sent the internet into mourning, reasons be damned.
