$4 Cake Pop Turns Delivery Driver Into an Internet Sensation

A $4 cake pop has managed to cause an astonishing amount of trouble in Florida.

It started when delivery driver Wes Stott arrived at a home in Milton to drop off a package.

The porch had a cooler filled with treats and a sign that included the words “Treat Yourself.”

So, Wes did.

Unfortunately, the cake pop he grabbed wasn't free.

And that's where a tiny dessert begins a surprisingly dramatic journey around the Internet.

He Thought the Cake Pop Was for Delivery Drivers

The house that Wes was delivering to is also home to Homemade Haven, a porch bakery that sells baked goods using the honor system.

There was a payment box attached to the stand, but Wes said he didn't see it.

That's not difficult to imagine.

People commonly leave snacks outside for delivery drivers, and the words “Treat Yourself” certainly sound like an invitation.

A doorbell camera captured Wes opening the cooler, taking a cake pop, and heading back to work.

Later, he said he was in a hurry and simply hadn't been paying enough attention.

Then His Face Appeared on Facebook

The bakery owner's husband posted an image of Wes in a local Facebook group and asked anyone who recognized the Amazon driver to tell him to come back and pay.

Wes eventually found the post himself.

Instead of disappearing into the Florida sunset with his ill-gotten dessert, he identified himself and apologized.

He explained that he hadn't taken the cake pop maliciously and had simply misunderstood the setup.

His wife then sent the bakery $5, covering the $4 cake pop with a dollar to spare.

You might assume that's where the story ends.

But, it’s not. 

The Internet Chose Team Wes

The bakery continued to maintain that Wes had taken something without paying, while people online began arguing that the entire situation had been blown out of proportion.

Some pointed to the “Treat Yourself” wording. 

Others questioned why someone should be publicly identified over a $4 misunderstanding that he'd already apologized and paid for.

The bakery eventually deleted the original post as the backlash grew.

Meanwhile, Wes did something wonderfully savvy with his viral TikTok fame.

He created an account called @cakepopthief850.

Then, he got a tattoo.

Wes eventually had a cake pop tattooed on his arm with the word “THIEF” written across it.

If the Internet is going to turn one hurried snack decision into your entire personality, you might as well commit to it. 

His new TikTok following quickly grew into the thousands, and he's thanked people for supporting him through the bizarre ordeal.

All because he saw a treat on a porch beneath the words “Treat Yourself.”

Perhaps there's a lesson here for all of us.

If the sign says treat yourself, check for a price tag first, especially if there's a doorbell camera watching.
