Delta Is Removing Free Snacks and Drinks on Hundreds of Short Flights
If you’re boarding a quick Delta flight this summer and already looking forward to your tiny bag of pretzels and midair ginger ale, you may want to grab something at the airport.
A new Delta flight service update will remove complimentary snacks and beverages from hundreds of short flights beginning May 19, as part of a broader change to the airline’s onboard service model.
Delta Free Drinks Removed
Under the new policy, on flights shorter than 350 miles, passengers in the main cabin and Delta Comfort will no longer receive a complimentary food or beverage service.
That includes water, coffee, soda, and snacks that were previously offered on many of these routes.
Delta says the move will affect about 450 daily flights, or about 9% of its network. Most of the impacted routes are flights that’ll last less than an hour.
Delta Air Lines Snack Changes Still Leave Some Perks Intact
The good news for frequent flyers is that First Class passengers will still receive full service, regardless of flight length.
And, flights over 350 miles will now receive expanded snack and beverage options under the new system.
Delta says the goal is to create a more consistent onboard experience across its network, replacing the older express service model that varied, depending on the length of the flight.
Why Travelers Are Talking About the Change
To no one's surprise, the reaction online has been mixed.
Some people understand the change on very short flights, especially on routes that barely leave enough time for the seatbelt sign to turn off.
Others say airline snack cuts in 2026 feel noticeable at a time when ticket prices are already high, and airlines are continuing to trim smaller perks from the travel experience.
Delta’s Short Flights Food Service
If you’re taking one of these shorter routes, all this means is tossing a bottle of water or a snack into your bag before boarding.
And, honestly, airline snacks were never exactly a five-star dining experience, anyway.
But, still, there was always something oddly comforting about being handed a tiny packet of cookies at 30,000 feet.
