Child Among Three Killed in Austin Shooting at Local Target

On Monday, August 11, 2025, a tragic and shocking shooting unfolded in the parking lot of a Target store in North Austin, resulting in the deaths of three people, including a child. The tragic event adds a grim chapter to the city’s recent spate of gun violence, occurring during the busy back‑to‑school shopping period. 

The Incident

At approximately 2:15 p.m., Austin Police responded to reports of shots fired at the Target location. Within minutes, officers discovered three victims—an adult and a child pronounced dead at the scene, and a second adult who succumbed to injuries after being transported to the hospital. A fourth person present was treated for minor, non‑traumatic medical issues. 

Suspect’s Flight and Capture

Police quickly identified a suspect—a 32‑year‑old white male with a history of mental health issues. After carrying out the deadly attack, he fled in a vehicle belonging to one of the victims. He then crashed that vehicle, stole another from a nearby dealership, and engaged in a frantic escape. Officers later located him about 20 miles away in South Austin, where he was subdued using a Taser and arrested. 

The suspect was subsequently identified as Ethan Nieneker, and has been booked into the Travis County Jail. He faces multiple charges, including capital murder by terror threat or other felony, capital murder of a person under 10 years old, and first‑degree murder. 

Community Response

Alice Davis, Austin Police Chief, said, “This is a very sad day for Austin. It’s a very sad day for us all, and my condolences go out to the families.”

Meanwhile, Mayor Kirk Watson posted on social media platform X, calling the act “a sickening, cowardly act of gun violence” and expressing gratitude for the swift actions of first responders. 

Target released a statement expressing devastation and confirmed that grief counseling would be made available to affected employees.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the shooting’s motive, which remains undetermined. Every aspect of the case—from the chain of events to the suspect’s background—is under close scrutiny.
