Boy, 10, Flees After Stabbing 7-Year-Old on School Playground
A 10-year-old boy stabbed a 7-year-old girl three times on the playground of Bubb Elementary School in Mountain View, California, on Wednesday, March 11. The attack occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. during an after-school program.
The boy allegedly used a kitchen knife, which was recovered at the scene by police. Mountain View firefighters treated the girl on-site for wounds to her shoulder before she was released to a parent. The school was placed on lockdown immediately following the attack.
The Boy Fled Before Being Caught
After the stabbing, the boy ran from the school into the surrounding neighborhood. An officer reviewed nearby home surveillance footage and recognized the boy from prior police contacts.
A K-9 unit from the Los Altos Police Department assisted in tracking him from the school to his home, where he was taken into custody without incident.
No Known Connection Between the Children
Police say the boy had no connection to Bubb Elementary School or its after-school program. Investigators have not confirmed whether the two children knew each other, and no motive has been established. Because both individuals are juveniles, police have released limited additional information.
Boy Transferred to Mental Health Services
Following his detention, the 10-year-old was transferred to Pacific Clinics, Santa Clara County's juvenile mental health services provider. The 7-year-old girl is recovering, according to the Mountain View Whisman School District.
"We're very grateful the student is expected to be okay," the district said in a statement. "The safety of our students is always our top priority."
Residents near the school expressed shock at the news. "A 10-year-old with a knife attacking someone? I can't even fathom how that could happen," neighbor Lori Parsons told KTVU.
