10 Jobs That Require Skills AI Still Can’t Master
AI can write an email, summarize a meeting, and analyze a spreadsheet in seconds. But try to send it up a tree with a chainsaw, and we may have found its limits.
A new Resume Now analysis looked at 894 occupations and identified the jobs AI can't replace quite so easily. Researchers weren't looking at creativity or communication skills this time. Instead, they focused on physical and sensory abilities that become particularly important when you're flying a plane, working underground, or running into a burning building.
The result is a fascinating list of jobs that require what the researchers call edsuperhuman skills.
These 10 Jobs Require the Most Superhuman Skills
Resume Now ranked occupations based on how heavily they relied on six different human abilities.
Out of the 894 jobs studied, only 21 earned a Superhuman Skills score of 600 or higher. These 10 came out on top:
Firefighters: 699
Airline Pilots, Copilots, and Flight Engineers: 677
Manufactured Building and Mobile Home Installers: 671
Tree Trimmers and Pruners: 646
Structural Iron and Steel Workers: 642
Derrick Operators, Oil and Gas: 637
Mining Roof Bolters: 636
Commercial Pilots: 636
Fishing and Hunting Workers: 634
Fallers: 633
Firefighters at No. 1 probably won't raise many eyebrows. But manufactured building and mobile home installers beating out tree trimmers, steel workers, and commercial pilots?
That's where things got interesting.
How Did Resume Now Come Up With the Rankings?
Resume Now used occupational data from O*NET, a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor. Rather than simply asking which jobs require the most physical strength, the team of researchers considered six different abilities:
Stamina: Sustaining physical effort for long periods
Static Strength: Lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying
Reaction Time: Responding quickly to something happening
Spatial Orientation: Knowing where you and other objects are in your surroundings
Time Sharing: Moving your attention between different activities or information
Problem Sensitivity: Recognizing when something is wrong or could go wrong
O*NET defines spatial orientation as knowing your location in relation to your environment, while problem sensitivity is the ability to recognize when something is wrong or likely to go wrong.
Then, Resume Now combined O*NET's importance and level ratings for each ability to create a score, with a theoretical maximum of 1,200. Jobs that required a strong combination of several abilities rose to the top of the list.
In other words, being exceptionally strong wasn't enough to win this particular superhero contest.
Why Are These Jobs Harder for AI to Replace?
When we take a look at that Top 10, a pattern starts to emerge. Folks in these roles aren't spending their entire workdays in predictable environments. They're working:
Inside burning buildings
Thousands of feet in the air
Underground
Around heavy machinery
High up in trees
On construction sites
Out on the water
They also need several abilities at the same time. A tree trimmer doesn't simply need the strength to handle equipment. He or she also needs to understand what's happening around them, anticipate danger, maintain stamina, and react quickly when something changes.
A pilot may have sophisticated technology at their fingertips, but they still need to monitor multiple sources of information, navigate their surroundings, and recognize trouble before it becomes an emergency.
That's what makes these AI-proof jobs particularly interesting. Automating one task is very different from replacing a person who’s constantly reacting to an unpredictable physical environment.
Physical Intelligence May Matter More Than We Think
When we talk about jobs that are safe from AI, the conversation tends to revolve around creativity, communication, or emotional intelligence. But this ranking highlights another human advantage: our ability to navigate the physical world.
We climb, balance, navigate, carry things, recognize hazards, react to sudden changes, and use several senses at once without thinking about how complicated any of that is. Consider structural iron and steel workers, who ranked fifth. Or fallers, the logging workers responsible for cutting down trees, who took the No. 10 spot. In both cases, strength matters. But, knowing where your body and equipment are in relation to everything around you matters, too.
And when you're bringing down a massive tree, spotting trouble before it happens really matters.
These Jobs Aren't Completely Safe From Technology
Of course, none of this means robots will forever stay out of the cockpit, construction site, or forest. Technology is already part of many of these jobs, and AI will almost certainly continue changing how the work gets done.
And that's also an important distinction in Resume Now's findings. Technology may automate individual tasks without eliminating an entire occupation. Fully replacing someone becomes more complicated when the job requires people to move through changing surroundings, react quickly, and make decisions when the consequences are immediate.
So the future of work may not simply come down to humans vs. AI. For many of us, it will mean working with increasingly sophisticated technology. And being able to lift something heavy, spot trouble, react in a split second, and know exactly where we are will always be a pretty impressive set of human superpowers.
