Trader Joe's Frozen Fried Rice Recall Just Got a Lot Bigger
If you've got Trader Joe's Vegetable Fried Rice sitting in your freezer right now, check the best-by date before you eat it.
Nearly 10 million pounds of the product have been added to an already massive recall after glass shards were found inside the frozen meals. The pieces ranged from one to three centimeters long—small enough to miss, big enough to do real damage.
Ajinomoto Foods North America issued the recall covering 9,885,240 pounds of the product, sold across 43 states. The only states not affected are Hawaii, Maine, New Mexico, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, and Iowa. Affected products carry best-by dates between February 28, 2026, and November 19, 2026—so this isn't just old stock sitting in the back of a freezer. Some of it doesn't expire for months.
Beyond the Vegetable Fried Rice, the recall also covers Trader Joe's Chicken Shu Mai and Trader Joe's Chicken Fried Rice.
This Is Part of Something Much Bigger
The Trader Joe's products aren't even the whole story. This recall is an expansion of a broader alert that has now ballooned to nearly 37 million pounds of ready-to-eat frozen items across more than a dozen brands—including Kroger and Tai Pei, among others. The original recall started last month and has been growing ever since.
The USDA classified it as a Class II recall, meaning serious harm is considered unlikely but not impossible. No injuries have been reported so far.
That's good news. Glass in food is the kind of thing that can go very wrong very fast, and "no injuries reported yet" isn't the same as "safe to eat."
What To Do
Don't eat it. Throw it out or take it back to the store for a full refund—Trader Joe's is good about that. If you think you may have already consumed an affected product and have concerns, reach out to a healthcare provider.
Ten million pounds sounds like an abstract number until you realize how many households buy this stuff on a regular grocery run. Check your freezer today.
