Smoked salmon is a handy thing to have in the freezer, especially when we're in the mood for a bagel with cream cheese or an easy lunch. But, if you've purchased some recently, check the package before your next meal.

Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. has issued a voluntary smoked salmon recall involving a Starfish Seafood product that may be contaminated with Listeria. The affected salmon was distributed in six states, and the FDA is advising consumers not to eat it.

The Starfish Seafood recall involves one specific product sold in frozen, vacuum-sealed packages. Here's what to look for on the label:

  • Brand: Starfish Seafood

  • Product: Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced

  • Package size: 8 ounces (227 grams)

  • UPC: 4751048940099

  • Lot number: D080-148

  • Best-before date: November 27, 2027

  • Country of origin: Latvia

The affected Starfish Seafood smoked salmon was distributed in the following states:

  • New York

  • Florida

  • Georgia

  • New Jersey

  • Pennsylvania

  • Ohio

The FDA published the recall notice on October 16, 2026. Fortunately, no illnesses had been reported when the recall was announced.

Why Is the Salmon Being Recalled?

The problem came to light after the New York State Department of Agriculture tested samples of the salmon. The testing identified potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, prompting Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. to recall the product.

The Brooklyn-based company is a wholesale distributor, not the manufacturer. It’s since notified its customers and asked them to stop selling the salmon.

What Are the Symptoms of Listeria?

Listeria is a bacterium that can make people seriously ill, although not everyone who becomes infected has the same symptoms. According to the FDA's recall announcement, symptoms can include:

  • High fever

  • Severe headache

  • Stiffness

  • Nausea

  • Abdominal pain

  • Diarrhea

While some healthy people may experience a short-term illness, Listeria can be especially dangerous for older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Pregnant women also face serious risks, including miscarriage and stillbirth.

If you've eaten the affected salmon and develop symptoms, contact your doctor right away and explain that you may have been exposed to Listeria.

What Should You Do With the Recalled Salmon?

If you have the affected product in your freezer, don't eat it. Even if the salmon looks and smells perfectly fine, that doesn't mean it's safe. The FDA says everyone should return the recalled salmon for a full refund.

If you have questions about the Listeria recall, you can contact Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. at (718) 858-6720. Team members are available Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm Eastern Time.

One detail worth paying attention to is the salmon's best-before date: November 27, 2027. That's more than a year away, which means anyone could have purchased the affected product with no plans to use it anytime soon. And because the salmon is frozen, it could be stuck in freezers for months.

If you like to keep some smoked salmon on hand, just be sure to check the lot number before you use it. The recall only affects lot D080-148, and that’s the one to look out for.
