IV Fluids Recalled Over Dangerous Contaminants
An IV fluid recall is underway after particles were discovered inside a product distributed to hospitals in the U.S.
B. Braun Medical Inc. is recalling three lots of 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection USP after particulate matter was found in the solution.
Since these fluids are delivered directly into the bloodstream, unwanted particles inside the bag can pose some serious health risks.
Here's what we know.
Three Lots Are Being Recalled
The B. Braun recall affects 100 mL of 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection USP packaged inside a 150 mL container.
According to the recall notice, the affected lots are:
J6B435
J6B444
J6B457
All three have an expiration date of April 30th, 2027.
The recalled IV fluids were distributed nationwide to hospitals and other healthcare providers between February 27th, 2026 and August 3rd, 2026.
Several Types of Particles Were Found
A sodium chloride injection is essentially sterile salt water used for hydration, and as a way to deliver compatible medications through an IV.
It should not, of course, contain stray pieces of other materials.
B. Braun's updated recall notice says the particles were identified as iron oxide, inorganic material, cellulose, or polystyrene.
The concern is what could happen if those particles enter someone's bloodstream.
According to the FDA notice, possible complications could include:
Pulmonary embolism
Blocked blood vessels
Tissue or organ damage
Inflammation of the veins
Blood clots
Immune system reactions
Breakdown of blood cells
In some cases, the consequences could be life-threatening.
There Haven't Been Any Reported Injuries
Fortunately, there's reassuring news in the announcement.
As of September 3rd, B. Braun said it hadn't received any reports of serious injuries, deaths, or other adverse events connected to the recalled product.
Still, the fluids are being pulled because of the potential risks.
The company is notifying distributors and customers, and arranging for the affected products to be returned and replaced.
What to Do With the Recalled IV Fluids
Unlike many of the recalls we cover, this isn't something most of us are likely to discover while rummaging through our kitchen cabinets.
These products were distributed to hospitals and healthcare providers.
Facilities that have the affected lots are being instructed to return them to the place of purchase.

Check Those Lot Numbers
For now, the important numbers are J6B435, J6B444, and J6B457.
There haven't been any reported injuries related to the recall, which is certainly good news.
But, an IV solution is supposed to safely deliver fluids or medication into someone's bloodstream.
And iron oxide, cellulose, and polystyrene definitely aren’t invited along for the ride.
