Horizon Organic Chocolate Milk Recall Expands Over Packaging Problem

If you’ve recently tossed a few chocolate milk boxes into lunch bags, after-school snacks, or the backseat cooler for a road trip, it may be time to check the carton before anyone takes a sip.

A new Horizon Organic chocolate milk recall is affecting thousands of shelf-stable milk boxes after concerns about a packaging problem that could compromise product safety. 

The recall was first issued in March, but the FDA officially classified it this week.

Which Chocolate Milk Products Are Being Recalled

The affected products include Horizon Organic Lowfat Chocolate Milk with DHA Omega-3. They’re sold in 8-ounce shelf-stable cartons. 

The milk was distributed in multipacks in:

• Arizona

• California

• Nevada

• Oregon

According to the FDA, more than 3,500 cases are involved in the recall, which adds up to over 60,000 individual cartons. 

This chocolate milk recall specifically involves products with compromised packaging, although the company hasn’t publicly detailed what went wrong with the cartons.

What the Horizon Milk Packaging Issue Means

The FDA classified the situation as a Class II recall, meaning the affected products could potentially cause temporary or medically reversible health issues, though the risk of serious harm is considered low.

When a Horizon milk packaging issue affects shelf-stable products like this, the concern is usually that damaged or compromised cartons may allow for spoilage or bacteria to grow over time.

What to Do if You Have the Recalled Milk

If you have any of the affected cartons at home, the FDA advises not to drink them. 

Instead, you should throw them away or return them to the store where you bought them for a refund.

Currently, this FDA milk recall doesn’t affect other Horizon Organic products, according to published recall notices.
