Food recalls happen regularly.

But, a deadly outbreak investigation is a little different.

Federal health officials are warning us about a growing Listeria outbreak in 2026 that’s already sickened people in multiple states, sent most of them to the hospital, and resulted in one death.

According to the FDA and CDC, the outbreak has been linked to recalled soft cheese products manufactured by Clover Hill Dairy.

Listeria Outbreak Linked to Recalled Soft Cheese

This investigation centers on a requesón cheese recall involving products sold under the Clover Hill Dairy brand.

According to the FDA, eight people in three states have become sick.

Seven of those people required hospitalization, and one person died.

Health officials also caution that the true number of illnesses may be much higher because most people recover without testing or medical treatment.

The recalled cheese may have been sold through retail stores, specialty markets, and food-service locations.

Why Health Officials Take Listeria So Seriously

Not every foodborne illness carries the same level of concern.

But, Listeria can cause especially severe infections in older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and people with weakened immune systems.

In some cases, the infection can spread beyond the digestive system and lead to serious complications.

Common symptoms include:

  • Fever

  • Muscle aches

  • Fatigue

  • Headaches

  • Stiff neck

  • Confusion

  • Loss of balance

For pregnant women, a Listeria infection can sometimes lead to pregnancy complications, even when symptoms appear mild.

The Clover Hill Dairy Recall Continues to Expand

As part of the Clover Hill Dairy recall, health officials are urging us not to eat any recalled cheese products and to dispose of them immediately or return them to the store where we bought them.

Investigators are continuing to trace where the products were distributed and whether additional illnesses may be connected to the outbreak.

Because soft cheese Listeria outbreaks have occurred before, the FDA recommends paying close attention to recall notices involving fresh cheeses that require refrigeration.

What to Do Now

If you recently purchased requesón cheese or other soft cheese products and aren't sure where they came from, now’s a good time to check labels and recall information.

Health officials say anyone experiencing symptoms after eating recalled products should call their doctor, especially if they fall into a higher-risk group.

A Recall Worth Taking Seriously

Many recalls come and go without causing widespread illness.

But, this multistate Listeria soft cheese outbreak is different because people have already become seriously ill, and federal investigators are still trying to understand the full scope of the problem.

For now, the safest approach is straightforward: check your refrigerator, review the recall information, and don't take chances with any recalled cheese products that may still be sitting in the back of the shelf.
