If you were following the news in 2021, you probably came across the heartwrenching story of Gabby Petito. She was a bright-eyed 22-year-old woman with dreams of adventure. So, she set off on a cross-country trip with her fiancé, Brian Laundrie. 

What started out as an exciting new chapter quickly turned into a nightmare, garnering the attention of the entire nation. To this day, the Gabby Petito case remains one of the most talked-about true crime stories in recent history, sparking conversations about domestic violence, social media, and the justice system.

Who Is Gabby Petito?

Gabby Petito was a beautiful young woman from Blue Point, New York, known for her free spirit and love of travel. She and Brian Laundrie had been in a relationship for a few years and, in early 2021, decided to document their travels across the United States in a converted van.

Only two months later, in late August, Gabby’s social media posts suddenly stopped. Her family, who had been in regular contact with her, became increasingly worried when they could no longer reach her.

To make matters worse, on September 1, Brian Laundrie returned home to Florida – alone. When the police showed up at his parent’s house – where he was staying – he refused to speak to them or Gabby’s family. To no surprise, this raised immediate red flags. 

Gabby’s parents reported her missing on September 11, kicking off a massive investigation. The case quickly went viral, with social media users, news outlets, and even amateur sleuths trying to piece together what happened to Gabby.

The Police Encounter Signs of Trouble

As investigators dug deeper, they uncovered disturbing details about Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie’s relationship. A key piece of evidence emerged from bodycam footage taken on August 12 in Moab, Utah. 

The couple had been stopped by police after witnesses reported a domestic dispute. In the footage, Gabby appeared distraught, while Brian had scratches on his face. Despite signs of tension, the police separated them for the night and did not press charges. They even went so far as to consider Gabby to be the problem, instead of Brian – who turned out to be the true abuser. 

This encounter, now widely analyzed, revealed cracks in their seemingly perfect relationship – as well as law enforcement’s inability to effectively intervene in issues pertaining to domestic violence. Later, experts would go on to label this as a missed opportunity to help Gabby before things got worse.

The Search and the Tragic Discovery

As time went by with no sign of Gabby, public interest in the case skyrocketed. Hashtags like #FindGabby trended on social media and people across the country followed every update. Internet sleuths began examining the couple’s social media activity, looking for clues. 

Then, on September 19, authorities made a devastating discovery: Gabby’s remains were found in a remote area of Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. The coroner later confirmed that she had died from strangulation – and her death was ruled a homicide. The nation mourned the loss of a young woman whose life was tragically cut short.

The Hunt for Brian Laundrie

With Gabby’s murder confirmed, all eyes turned to Brian Laundrie. He had been named a person of interest early on but, by the time authorities were ready to question him, he’d vanished. His parents claimed he went on a solo hike in a Florida nature reserve, but days turned into weeks with no sign of him.

During the search, speculation ran rampant. Some believed he was hiding in the wilderness, while others thought he had fled the country. The case dominated headlines, and people across the U.S. debated whether Brian’s parents had helped him evade capture.

Finally, on October 20, authorities found human remains in the Carlton Reserve in Florida. Dental records confirmed they belonged to Brian Laundrie. His cause of death was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Alongside his remains, investigators found a notebook where he took responsibility for Gabby’s death – although his details didn’t line up. 

He said he killed her because she’d suffered an injury and he was, essentially, putting her out of her misery. But, medical examiners could not corroborate his fictitious tale, meaning he not only took his own life in an act of cowardice, but also took hers in an act of violence. 

The Aftermath and Impact of the Case

Gabby Petito’s tragic story sparked national conversations about domestic violence and the role social media plays in shaping public perception. Many pointed out how Gabby’s case received widespread attention while similar cases involving women of color often go unnoticed. The discussion led to increased awareness about missing persons cases and media bias.

The case also had legal repercussions. Gabby’s family filed a lawsuit against Brian Laundrie’s parents, accusing them of knowing about Gabby’s murder and helping Brian evade authorities. In the end, the case was settled out of court. People hoped it would provide Gabby’s parents with some semblance of comfort, but we’ll never really know.
