Trump Calls Super Bowl Performers "Terrible"—And He's Not Going to the Game
Donald Trump has opinions about the Super Bowl performers, and he's not keeping them to himself.
The president told the New York Post he's "anti" both Bad Bunny and Green Day, the artists set to perform at the NFL game on February 8. Green Day opens the show, Bad Bunny takes halftime.
"I think it's a terrible choice," Trump said. "All it does is sow hatred. Terrible."
Both artists have been longtime critics of Trump and his administration, so the feeling seems mutual.
He's Skipping the Game
Trump attended last year's Super Bowl in New Orleans, but he won't be at this year's game in San Francisco. He clarified that his dislike for the performers isn't why he's staying home.
"It's just too far away," he said. "I would. I've [gotten] great hands [at] the Super Bowl. They like me."
"I would go if, you know, it was a little bit shorter," Trump added.
Green Day Hasn't Been Shy
The NFL announced earlier this month that Green Day will kick off the Super Bowl. The band has been critical of Trump since his first term in office.
The "Basketcase" rockers have a history of making political statements through their music. They've changed the lyrics of their hit "American Idiot" to slam Trump's "MAGA agenda" at concerts. They also sold shirts with his mugshot on them to raise money for charity.
Bad Bunny Skipped the U.S. for a Reason
Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has also been openly critical of Trump.
The singer made headlines last year when he chose not to bring his record-breaking Debí Tirar Más Fotos World Tour to the U.S. because of the Trump administration's mass deportations and ICE crackdowns.
"There were many reasons why I didn't show up in the U.S., and none of them were out of hate—I've performed there many times. All of [the shows] have been successful," he told i-D last fall.
"But there was the issue of—like, f---ing ICE could be outside [my concert]," Bad Bunny said. "And it's something that we were talking about and very concerned about."
After Bad Bunny was announced as a Super Bowl performer in September, he celebrated with an X post: "I've been thinking about it these days, and after discussing it with my team, I think I'll do just one date in the United States." He said the performance would be "for my people, my culture, and our history."
Days later, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem threatened that ICE agents would "be all over" Super Bowl LX.
Trump previously claimed he'd "never heard of" Bad Bunny. "I don't know who he is," Trump said while calling into Newsmax's Greg Kelly Reports last fall. "I don't know why they're doing it, it's crazy."
So, the president doesn't like the Super Bowl performers, the performers don't like the president, and he's not going to the game anyway because it's too far. Super Bowl LX happens Sunday, February 8, and the halftime show just got a lot more interesting.
