Actor Wenne Alton Davis, known for their appearances in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “New Amsterdam,” and several other television dramas, died Monday after being struck by a vehicle in Midtown Manhattan. Davis was 60.

According to the New York Police Department, officers responded to reports of a collision around 8:45 p.m. on Dec. 8 at the intersection of West 53rd Street and Broadway. Investigators said a black Cadillac driven by a 61-year-old man hit Davis as the driver made a left turn while Davis was walking in the crosswalk. The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined the impact caused severe trauma to Davis’s head and body.

Davis was transported to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The driver remained at the scene and was uninjured. Police said no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

A Working Actor With a Range of Television Credits

Davis, who used they/them pronouns, built a steady career in television and film over the past two decades. In 2023, they appeared in a Season 5 episode of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” playing a police officer opposite Rachel Brosnahan. They also portrayed a police officer in the 2011 film “Shame,” starring Michael Fassbender.

Other television credits include roles in “Girls5Eva,” “Blindspot,” “American Odyssey,” “Rescue Me,” and “New Amsterdam.” They also played Gloria in the 2014 television movie “The Normal Heart.” Davis often appeared in detective or law enforcement roles, a niche they returned to several times throughout their career.

Their IMDb page lists ten acting credits, reflecting a mix of network dramas, indie films, and character roles that kept them working consistently in New York’s production community.

Queens Resident Remembered Fondly by Friends and Neighbors

Davis lived in Forest Hills, Queens, where they built close relationships with neighbors. Edward Reynoso, who lived in the same building, told the New York Daily News that he shared a brief but emotional exchange with Davis just hours before the accident. “I love you, I appreciate you,” Davis told him, a moment he found especially poignant after learning of their death.

“It was so weird to me, because I felt like she was saying goodbye,” he said. “Now that this happened, it all seems so odd to me.”

A friend told the Daily News that Davis had gone to Manhattan for dinner earlier that night. When they did not text their usual check-in, the friend grew concerned. “I was worried. I was texting her and she didn’t respond,” the friend said. “I’m numb to tell you the truth. I can’t believe it.”

Davis lived with their beloved cat, frequently featured on their Instagram page. Their social media also reflected a passion for boxing classes and a deep affection for their acting community.

A Sudden Loss in New York’s Acting Community

While Davis was not a household name, their steady presence across respected television series made them a familiar face within the industry. Colleagues and friends described them as kind, dedicated, and deeply committed to their craft.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision.
