"Sopranos" Star Vincent Pastore Dies at 80
Vincent Pastore, the actor whose portrayal of Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero made him one of the most memorable faces of The Sopranos, has died at 80.
Pastore was discovered Saturday, Aug. 1, at his home in the Bronx, New York, by a neighbor, according to Deadline. His manager, Robert Attermann, had reportedly not heard from him in three days, though a family friend said Pastore's driver had spoken with him by phone Friday night. His death is believed to be from natural causes and is not currently being investigated by the medical examiner.
Attermann reflected on their decades-long working relationship in a statement to E! News. "I had the privilege of representing Vinny for more than 30 years, long before The Sopranos made him a household name," Attermann said. "To the world, he will always be remembered as the unforgettable 'Big Pussy,' but to those of us who knew him, he was so much more."
A Character Fans Never Forgot
When The Sopranos premiered on HBO in 1999, Big Pussy became one of the show's most emotionally complicated figures, a longtime friend of Tony Soprano's whose loyalty and eventual betrayal drove some of the series' most gripping storylines during its six-season run from 1999 to 2007. The character's fate remains one of the show's most talked-about arcs more than two decades later.
Beyond The Sopranos, Pastore built a long career across film and television, appearing in Goodfellas, Carlito's Way and Law & Order, among numerous other credits, often playing colorful, larger-than-life New York characters that drew on his own background before acting, which included time as a bouncer and nightclub owner in the city.
Costars Remember "Vinny"
Tributes from Pastore's Sopranos castmates poured in quickly following news of his death. Michael Imperioli, who played Christopher Moltisanti, shared a throwback photo of the two of them on Instagram. "Our beloved friend and collaborator VINCENT PASTORE has passed away," Imperioli wrote. "This is a hard one for us, it seems like I've known Vinny forever. We did lots of work together and traveled all over the USA as well as Italy and Australia. Lots of good times. Lots of laughs."
Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who played Meadow Soprano, wrote on her Instagram Stories, "A wonderful actor, a kind and loving man. It was an honor to know you and work with you."
Joe Pantoliano, who played Ralph Cifaretto, also paid tribute, writing, "God bless him. He made it to 80. Vin and I were never actually on set together, but through our Sopranos family I got to know him over the years. I always liked him. He had this incredible appetite for the business and he never lost that spark. That always made me smile. My heart goes out to his family, his friends and everyone who loved him. Rest easy, Vin."
Steven Van Zandt, who played Silvio Dante, wrote on X, "Another irreplaceable brother gone. It never gets any easier. Travel well Vincenzo." Dominic Chianese, who played Corrado "Junior" Soprano, remembered him simply as a "gem," writing on Instagram, "We lost a friend today. Paying respect and sending Love in tribute."
A Legacy Beyond the Screen
Pastore is survived by his daughter, Renee Pastore, whom he shared with ex-wife Nancy Berke. Those who knew him personally have described him as generous with his time, someone who embraced fan interactions and never took the success The Sopranos brought him for granted, even decades after the show ended.
More than two decades since the series first aired, The Sopranos continues to find new audiences through streaming, and Pastore's Big Pussy remains one of its most enduring characters, a reminder of how the actor managed to bring humanity, humor and heartbreak to a role that could have easily been one-dimensional in lesser hands.
