Rick and Morty Movie Officially Confirmed at Warner Bros.
The Rick and Morty movie is officially happening.
Warner Bros. is in early development on a feature film based on the Adult Swim animated series, with series veteran Jacob Hair in talks to direct. Co-creator Dan Harmon confirmed the news to CinemaBlend ahead of the show's Season 9 premiere, set for Sunday, May 24 on Adult Swim.
"We saw the same leak, and we are therefore now able to confirm that there is a movie in the works," Harmon said. "Jacob Hair is the director. I mean, we didn't shop around. He is an absolute — to say rock star honestly feels like trivializing it."
Who Is Jacob Hair
Hair has been part of the Rick and Morty creative team since 2019, directing numerous episodes and currently serving as supervising director for Season 9. Fan-favorite episodes he directed include "Vat of Acid" and "Unmortricken," both widely considered among the best in the series. Harmon described bringing him on as "like adding a pillar" to the show.
His background extends beyond Rick and Morty — he has prior experience at Walt Disney Animation — but the franchise is where he has built his reputation. The decision to keep the film in-house rather than bring in an outside director signals that the creative team wants the movie to feel like an extension of the show rather than a departure from it.
What We Know About the Movie
Plot details are under wraps. What has been confirmed is that the film will be animated, maintaining the show's signature visual style, and will be a Warner Bros. theatrical release — putting it in the same category as The Simpsons Movie and The Bob's Burgers Movie rather than a streaming debut.
Harmon has been teasing a feature for years. Back in 2023 he described his vision as simply taking a Rick and Morty adventure, spending significantly more money on it, and stretching it to 90 minutes. Whether that straightforward approach is still the plan hasn't been confirmed, but it suggests the goal is an elevated version of the show rather than a reinvention.
Where the Franchise Stands
Rick and Morty first premiered in 2013, created by Harmon and Justin Roiland. It quickly became one of Adult Swim's most-watched series and an Emmy winner. The show has already been renewed through Season 12, and a spinoff series called President Curtis — featuring voice actor Keith David in the lead role — is also set to debut on Adult Swim.
Roiland, who originally voiced both Rick and Morty, departed the series in 2023 following felony domestic abuse charges that were ultimately dismissed. Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden now voice the two lead characters respectively.
The movie announcement arrives as Season 9 kicks off this weekend, giving the fanbase a double dose of news heading into the summer.
