Thirty years since the first games launched, Pokémon presented a stream to announce their future plans for the franchise. The company is leaning hard into nostalgia while pushing forward with new content.

Here's what got announced.

Gen 10 Is Coming in 2027

Pokémon Winds and Waves is the 10th generation of the video games. They'll be releasing globally in 2027 on Switch 2. The region looks tropical with multiple biomes, resort structures, and towns built on water. Possible underwater activities teased.

Three new starters got revealed. Browt is a small bird. Pombon is a fire puppy. Gecqua is a water amphibian. More details coming later.

FireRed and LeafGreen Hit Nintendo Switch

The Game Boy Advance remakes of Gen 1 are available now on Nintendo Switch. They include Pokémon Home integration as part of the modern release.

These were previously confirmed but they're live as of February 27.

Pokémon XD Finally Gets a Re-Release

Pokémon XD Gale of Darkness is coming to Nintendo Switch Online's GameCube selection in March 2026. This is huge for anyone who wanted to try this lesser-known spin-off but didn't want to pay ridiculous prices for a physical GameCube copy.

New Battle-Focused Game in April

Pokémon Champions arrives on Switch in April. Mobile version is expected later this year. This is a client focused solely on battling other trainers. No catching, no exploration. Just competitive battles.

Might appeal to the competitive crowd.

Pokémon Pokopia Launches March 5

The cozy life sim arrives on March 5 for Switch 2. New reveals include DJ Rotom, a stereo-focused form that plays CDs the player-Ditto finds. Also, Chef Dente, a culinary master Greedent who might be the best thing announced today.

Four-player multiplayer town visits are included. The building-and-living sim looks genuinely delightful.

Legends Z-A Gets New Mega

Pokémon Legends Z-A launched last year. Getting fresh content in 2026. Mega Garchomp Z is available today for owners of both the game and the Mega Dimension DLC.

It is interesting that it requires owning both. But the new Garchomp looks cool.

Live Service Updates

Pokémon Go is celebrating its 10th anniversary alongside the series' 30th. Past event Pokémon are returning in early March. Pokémon Go Tour: Kalos starts tomorrow, February 28. Use promo code GOTOURKALOS before Monday, March 2.

Physical Card Game and Merch

The Pokémon Trading Card Game is getting a 30th anniversary set releasing sometime in 2026. Classic cards, Tag Teams, and more are included.

World Championships in San Francisco

Pokémon XP and World Championships are headed to San Francisco August 28-30. It's not just a competition. The expo will host events and spaces for families to hang out and celebrate Pokémon. New artwork commemorating the event got released with the new annoucements.

What Matters

Gen 10 is the big news. Pokémon Winds and Waves are launching globally in 2027 on Switch 2. The game features a tropical region, three new starters, and possible underwater exploration.

Everything else is either nostalgia (FireRed/LeafGreen on Switch, Game Music Collection, XD re-release) or live service updates for existing games.

Pokémon Pokopia launching March 5 looks genuinely charming. Pokémon Champions in April could appeal to competitive players. The rest is standard anniversary fare and seasonal content updates.

Thirty years of Pokémon. The company is celebrating by re-releasing old games, updating live services, and teasing Gen 10. Standard playbook for a major gaming franchise hitting a milestone anniversary.
