“Paranoid, Dangerous Spiral”: Ex-Assistant Describes Life Under Diddy’s Control

The second week of Sean "Diddy" Combs' trial didn't focus solely on the violence he allegedly inflicted on women in his life. A new key witness testimony purported to reveal insights into what it was like to work for Combs.
David James, who worked as Combs’ personal assistant from 2007 to 2009, took the stand on May 20. His testimony reinforced key parts of Cassie Ventura’s earlier claims.
The Disturbing Account of Combs' Assistant
James' behind-the-scenes account depicted a drug-fueled and paranoid lifestyle. He testified that Combs was using drugs almost daily; "Percocet by day and ecstasy by night."
As Combs' assistant, James said he was often tasked with booking hotel rooms under the alias "Frank Black" and stocking the room with the music star's peculiar list of "comforts": fresh underwear, applesauce, vodka, baby oil, Viagra, and condoms, to name a few.
James described obeying an order to bring Combs an iPod at a Miami hotel, only to walk in on Cassie in bed under a sheet and an unfamiliar naked man fleeing the room. He stated that he quickly realized he had accidentally stumbled upon one of Combs' orchestrated "freak-offs."
Later, Combs allegedly showed him embarrassing footage of James at a party, warning: "I'll keep this in case I need it." James interpreted it as blackmail, and so did the jury.
James corroborated Cassie's claims that Combs habitually used intimate material as leverage. Cassie herself had testified that Combs threatened to release sex tapes of her with other men if she ever stepped out of line.
A Gun Run to Suge Knight
James testified that working for Combs became increasingly perilous, ultimately driving him to quit.
In one chilling anecdote, James recounted an incident in November 2008. He testified that Combs forced him to drive to confront rap mogul Suge Knight with three loaded handguns resting on Combs’ lap.
“This was the first time I realized my life was in danger,” he told jurors.
A Different Man Behind Closed Doors
David James didn’t just back up Cassie’s story, he experienced it from the inside. He claims that he witnessed the control, paranoia, and threats disguised as tests of loyalty.
Another key witness testimony aligning with the prosecution’s core argument that this wasn’t merely manipulation, but a calculated pattern of coercive behavior central to the charges Combs now faces.
