“Malcolm in the Middle” Is Back — But One Original Cast Member Said No

Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair dropped on Disney+ on April 10 and most of the original family is back. Frankie Muniz. Bryan Cranston. Jane Kaczmarek. Christopher Masterson. Justin Berfield. The chaos, presumably, is intact.

But Dewey isn't there. Not the original one anyway.

Erik Per Sullivan, who played the youngest brother for all seven seasons of the original run, passed on the revival entirely. Canadian actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark is stepping into the role instead — his first lead in anything after smaller parts in shows like The Handmaid's Tale and Fargo.

Why Per Sullivan Isn't Coming Back

This one is actually a pretty good story. Per Sullivan did Malcolm from age 7 to 14 and when it ended he was just done with acting. Not burned out, not bitter — just done. He went to school. He built a life outside of Hollywood. His last on-screen credit was a 2010 film called Twelve, and then he basically disappeared from the industry entirely.

Kaczmarek, who played his TV mom Lois, has been one of the few people who gives occasional updates on him. At a convention in Paris in 2024, she said he was studying Victorian literature at a prestigious American university he asked her not to name. He seemed to be doing great. Just not interested in acting.

Then in April 2026, she confirmed to The Guardian that the university is Harvard — where, in a genuinely funny twist, the fictional Malcolm was just starting his freshman year when the show ended in 2006.

"He's studying Dickens and is an incredible student," Kaczmarek said. "They offered him buckets of money to come back, and he just said: 'No thank you.'"

Buckets of money. No thank you. That's a rare kind of clarity.

What the Revival Is Actually About

The four-episode limited series picks up with Malcolm as an adult, drawn back into the family orbit when Hal and Lois demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary. He brings his daughter Leah along for the chaos.

New additions to the family include Anthony Timpano as Jamie — the baby Lois was pregnant with in the 2006 finale — and Vaughan Murrae as Kelly, yet another sibling who apparently arrived somewhere along the way. Malcolm's girlfriend Tristan, described as "charming and opinionated" and "way out of his league," is played by Kiana Madeira.

Where Everyone Ended Up

Muniz is probably the most surprising post-Malcolm story. He's been racing cars. Seriously racing cars — he earned a spot in the 2025 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and talked about it the way someone talks about a lifelong dream finally happening.

"I think at first maybe people thought it was like a hobby," he said last year. "You earn respect as a driver when you're out there competing and beating them. That's what I'm trying to do."

The original show ran from 2000 to 2006 — 151 episodes across seven seasons before Fox pulled the plug amid falling ratings. The pilot drew over 22 million viewers. By season six that number had been cut nearly in half.

Almost 20 years later Disney+ is bringing it back. Most of the family showed up. One of them is at Harvard studying Dickens and apparently couldn't be bothered.

Honestly that might be the most Dewey thing possible.
