Macaulay Culkin Reportedly Pitches Disney a New "Home Alone" Movie
Macaulay Culkin may be trading in Kevin McCallister's oversized coat for a new role in the Home Alone franchise, this time as the dad instead of the kid.
According to entertainment journalist Matthew Belloni, Culkin was recently spotted at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California, meeting with Disney executives about a potential new installment of the beloved holiday franchise. Belloni broke the news on his podcast, The Town, saying Disney is "extremely eager" to bring Culkin back and views his involvement as a major draw for audiences.
"He's talked about having an idea for a new Home Alone, and Disney is, like, salivating," Belloni said. "They're offering him another movie, like he could do his own passion project if he could also do another Home Alone, and they have a good idea. I've talked to people who have heard it, and it's a really good idea for a Home Alone reboot with Macaulay Culkin."
Culkin, 45, reportedly pitched a version of Kevin McCallister as a grown man, either widowed or divorced, juggling a career while raising a child on his own, a child who, in a twist on the original premise, ends up locking Kevin out of the house and setting traps of his own.
Culkin Has Hinted at This Before
The idea isn't coming completely out of nowhere. At a November 2025 event marking the original film's 35th anniversary, Culkin signaled he'd be open to another installment under the right circumstances, saying he "wouldn't be completely allergic" to it, provided the idea "would have to be just right."
During his anniversary tour, Culkin shared behind-the-scenes stories from the original film, including the time Joe Pesci accidentally bit his finger during a rehearsal, a scar Culkin said he still has and jokingly calls a souvenir. He's also mentioned that his own children don't realize he's the kid from Home Alone, and that they've already started coming up with their own trap ideas after watching the movie.
As of now, nothing has been officially announced by Disney regarding a new installment, and reporting on the pitch indicates the project remains in early, exploratory stages.
Culkin Appears to Pump the Brakes
Despite the buzz, Culkin himself pushed back on the reports Wednesday, commenting on a social media post about the story, "Y'all are out of your mind. My favorite part of HA is when I'm watching it with my kiddos." It remains unclear whether that comment reflects a change of heart or simply a lighthearted response to the speculation.
A Franchise Still Searching for Its Next Chapter
Disney has attempted to revive the franchise before without Culkin. The studio released Home Sweet Home Alone as a Disney+ exclusive in 2021, starring Archie Yates as a new lead character, Max Mercer. That reboot landed to poor reviews, earning just a 15% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, and the franchise hasn't gained much traction since.
Culkin starred in the original 1990 film and its 1992 sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, both of which remain holiday staples. He's remained connected to the character over the years, including a 2018 Google Assistant commercial in which he briefly reprised the role as an adult, and a 2025 short film titled Home But Not Alone as part of an advertising campaign.
Chris Columbus, who directed the original film, has previously expressed skepticism about revisiting the franchise, suggesting it would be difficult to recapture the magic of the first movie.
