Katy Perry Is Being Investigated Over Ruby Rose's Sexual Assault Allegations
This escalated fast.
What started as a comment on Threads over the weekend has turned into an active police investigation. Victoria Police confirmed to Australian media on April 15 that detectives from the Melbourne Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation team are looking into a historical sexual assault that allegedly occurred at a licensed premises in Melbourne's CBD in 2010.
The investigation stems from allegations made by Ruby Rose against Katy Perry.
What Rose Alleged
Rose, 40, made the allegations publicly on Threads on Sunday after seeing an article about Perry reacting to Justin Bieber's Coachella set. She replied in the comments — not in a carefully worded press statement, just in a comment section — alleging that Perry sexually assaulted her at Spice Market nightclub in Melbourne when she was in her early twenties.
"It has taken almost 2 decades to say this publicly," Rose wrote. "Though I am so grateful to have made it long enough to find my voice, it just shows how much of an impact trauma and sexual assault takes."
In follow-up posts Rose described the alleged incident in explicit detail — claiming Perry approached her while she was resting with a friend, trying to avoid her, and proceeded to commit a non-consensual sexual act against her face. She said it was witnessed by multiple people and that she has photos. The description is graphic and deeply disturbing regardless of how the investigation ultimately unfolds.
It Got Serious Quickly
A day after posting, she announced she was going to a police station to file a report, acknowledging the incident might be past the statute of limitations but saying that was all the more reason to try.
"As of this afternoon, I have finalised all my reports," she confirmed on Threads Tuesday. "This means I am no longer able to comment, repost, or talk publicly about any of those cases, or the individuals involved. This is a standard request from the police and in many ways, quite the relief. I can start the healing process now."
What Perry's Team Said
A representative for Perry denied the allegations in a statement before the police investigation was confirmed.
"The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are dangerous, reckless lies," the rep said. "Ms. Rose has a well-documented history of making serious public allegations on social media against various individuals, claims that have repeatedly been denied by those named."
Perry herself hasn't addressed the allegations directly. On Tuesday she posted "i love you" on her Instagram Stories alongside an image of her song "By the Grace of God" — a track about surviving a dark period in her life. She has not commented further.
Perry's rep did not immediately respond to additional requests for comment once the police investigation was confirmed.
A History of Allegations
Perry's rep seems to be leaning into Rose having a history of making serious public allegations against various individuals. The most notable example came in 2021 when Rose made a series of sweeping public accusations against the CW, Warner Bros. Television, producers, and her former Batwoman co-star Dougray Scott — alleging toxic working conditions, unsafe practices, and misconduct that she said drove her from the show after one season.
Warner Bros. TV responded firmly, calling Rose's account "revisionist history" and revealing that she hadn't quit — she had been let go following an internal investigation into "multiple complaints about workplace behavior" against Rose herself. Scott denied her allegations against him completely, calling them "entirely made up and never happened." Multiple other parties named in her posts also denied her claims.
That history doesn't determine what happened in Melbourne in 2010 — but it's part of the full picture Perry's team is clearly trying to paint.
Where Things Stand
Victoria Police were clear that the investigation is ongoing and declined to say more. What happens next depends on what investigators find, whether witnesses cooperate, and whether the statute of limitations presents an obstacle — something Rose herself acknowledged as a possibility when she walked into the police station.
Rose has been quiet publicly since filing her reports as instructed. Perry has been quiet publicly full stop.
What was a social media comment on Sunday morning is now a formal criminal investigation by Tuesday evening. However it resolves, that's a remarkable few days.
Due to the serious nature of the accusation and the manner in which it was released, it seems both women are entitled to due process. The investigation will determine what, if anything, can be established. Until then this sits where most of these situations sit — in the uncomfortable space between a serious allegation and a categorical denial, with the truth somewhere that hasn't been fully established yet.
