DEDHAM, Mass. — May 13, 2025 — The Karen Read murder trial was unexpectedly postponed Tuesday morning, just minutes before court was scheduled to begin. A court spokesperson announced the delay was due to “unavoidable circumstances” but offered no additional details.

Trial Day 15 Abruptly Canceled

The 15th day of witness testimony was scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. in Norfolk Superior Court in Dedham. At approximately 8:40 a.m., court spokesperson Jennifer Donahue informed reporters that the day’s proceedings had been canceled. The court has not announced a new date or cause regarding the cancelation.

It remains unclear who the prosecution planned to call next to the witness stand when the trial resumes.

Case Background and Charges

Karen Read, 45, is charged with:

  • Second-degree murder

  • Manslaughter while operating under the influence

  • Leaving the scene of personal injury and death

She has pleaded not guilty. Her first trial in 2024 ended in a mistrial after a hung jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict.

Prosecutors allege Read struck her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, with her SUV and left him in a snowbank outside 34 Fairview Road in Canton (home of Brian Albert), where he was later found dead.

Read’s attorneys argue she’s being framed, claiming O’Keefe was killed during a fight inside the home and his body was staged outside.

Investigator’s Testimony Wrapped Up Monday

On Monday, the jury heard the conclusion of testimony from key investigator Yuri Bukhenik, who spent three days on the stand. His cross-examination focused on his connection to fired State Police Trooper Michael Proctor, evidence handling, and alternative suspects.

Outside court last week, Read told reporters the prosecution’s case is nearing its end. However, the number of remaining witnesses is unknown due to a gag order placed on both legal teams.
