The Australian wellness community is mourning the loss of food influencer and nutritionist Stacey Warnecke (née Hatfield), who died from what her husband described as “an extremely rare complication” shortly after giving birth to the couple’s first child. She was 30 years old.

Her husband, Nathan Warnecke, shared the devastating news in an emotional Instagram post on October 19, writing, “It’s with heavy heart that (I) share with you the unexpected passing of my beautiful wife, soul mate and best friend, Stacey Warnecke.”

According to Warnecke, his wife passed away on September 29 after successfully giving birth to their son, Axel, at home in Melbourne, Australia. “Tragically, shortly after, an unforeseen and extremely rare complication arose and she passed after being transferred to hospital,” he wrote. “Hospital staff were amazing and did the utmost to help, but ultimately nothing could be done despite their best efforts.”

The couple, who married last year after nine years together, had eagerly anticipated the arrival of their baby boy. “She loved being pregnant and over the last nine months told our son she loved him every day,” Warnecke shared in the comments of his Instagram post. “She held Axel when he was born, nursed him, saw that he was a boy and loved him. She loved him so much and still, continues to love him.”

A Sudden Loss

Warnecke’s announcement described the tragedy as “a terrible shock” to their family and friends.

Words can’t do justice to how devastating this is for myself and everyone that knew and loved her,” he said. “She was my lighthouse in the storm and the world is less bright without her in it.

The new father said his wife had been “most at home in nature, surrounded by trees and sand at her feet,” and found joy in small pleasures like reading with a mug of green tea and spending time with their French Bulldog, Winter. “She lived her whole life with an appreciation for everything she had and cared not for materialistic possessions,” he added.

The Rise of Natural Spoonfuls

Known online for her gentle approach to wellness and her “low-tox living” philosophy, Warnecke was the creator and business owner behind Natural Spoonfuls, a website and social media brand dedicated to healthy recipes and holistic lifestyle tips. She began her company in 2019, partnering with local food brands and sharing nutritious recipes with her followers.

Her Instagram page, which has more than 19,000 followers, became a source of inspiration for fans seeking approachable, nourishing meals and tips on natural living. Warnecke often posted homemade recipes, kitchen experiments, and reflections on mindfulness and balance.

“She took great pride in what she did,” her husband told USA TODAY on October 20. “Her work was an incredible part of her life.”

Community Support and Fundraiser

In the days following her death, a GoFundMe fundraiser was launched by Jon Downie, the newborn baby's uncle, to support Nathan and baby Axel. “On a day that should have been the happiest day of their life, the unimaginable occurred,” Downie wrote. “Shortly after the arrival of their son Axel, Stacey passed away due to complications from childbirth.”

The fundraiser aims to help with funeral expenses, baby supplies, childcare costs, and to give Nathan time to grieve and bond with his newborn son. “We are sincerely asking for support to help Nathan focus on what matters most—grieving, healing, and bonding with his son Axel,” the campaign reads.

As of October 20, the campaign had raised more than $33,400 Australian dollars (approximately $21,700 USD) in donations. “Nathan is not one to ask for help,” Downie wrote, “however we know he will need assistance. With love and support, we know he will succeed and be an amazing father to Axel.”

A Rare Complication With Devastating Consequences

While Nathan Warnecke did not specify the medical cause of his wife’s death, he described it as “an unforeseen and extremely rare complication” that occurred shortly after childbirth. According to the World Health Organization, roughly 70,000 women die each year worldwide from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth, though the vast majority of these deaths occur in low-income regions. In developed nations like Australia, maternal deaths are uncommon—making cases like Warnecke’s particularly tragic and shocking to the public.

Medical experts note that even with advanced healthcare, rare complications such as amniotic fluid embolism, hemorrhage, or undetected infection can lead to fatal outcomes within hours after delivery.

Warnecke’s family has not disclosed further details, asking instead for privacy as they mourn.

An Outpouring of Support

Fans and fellow creators have flooded the comments of Natural Spoonfuls’ social media pages with messages of condolence. “Stacey inspired me to change my life and eat better,” one follower wrote. “She radiated kindness in every post.” Another commented, “The world feels dimmer without her warmth.”

Many followers also expressed heartbreak at the thought of her young son growing up without her, sharing words of encouragement for Nathan and baby Axel.

As messages of love continue to pour in, Stacey Warnecke’s digital legacy lives on in the community she built. Her husband’s words perhaps capture her spirit best: “She was my lighthouse in the storm.”
