A hazmat incident at Disneyland sent multiple employees to the hospital Tuesday and forced the temporary closure of several attractions in the park's Tomorrowland area.

What Happened

Emergency personnel from Anaheim Fire and Rescue responded to reports of an unknown odor in a backstage area near the Star Tours attraction at approximately 12:30 p.m. The source of the odor was later determined to be building contractor materials that had produced a chemical reaction backstage.

Seven Disney employees were hospitalized after experiencing symptoms including dizziness and shortness of breath. Emergency personnel remained on the scene for several hours before operations resumed.

Which Areas Were Closed

As a precaution, Disneyland officials closed and evacuated several nearby areas while crews investigated. The affected attractions and locations included Star Tours, Space Mountain, Star Traders, the Space Mountain bathrooms, and the top of Star Wars Launch Bay.

Cast members formed a human barrier to prevent guests from entering The Star Trader shop, and guests were evacuated from rides in the immediate vicinity. Onstage areas near the incident were temporarily cleared of park visitors.

No Guests Were Hospitalized

Disneyland confirmed that no guests required hospitalization as a result of the incident. The swift response by cast members and emergency personnel kept visitors away from the affected area while crews worked to identify the source of the odor.

Park operations resumed following the investigation. Anaheim Fire and Rescue attributed the incident to a reaction caused by materials used by a building contractor working in the backstage area.

Disneyland Has Not Issued Further Comment

Disneyland officials confirmed to NBC that contractor materials triggered the backstage reaction but did not elaborate further on the specific substances involved. The identity of the contractor has not been publicly disclosed.

The incident is not believed to pose any ongoing risk to guests or employees, and the park has returned to normal operations.
