Disney Confirms a Beloved Holiday Tradition Has Ended After 27 Years
Walt Disney World Resort has confirmed that the life-size Gingerbread House will not return to Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa for the 2026 holiday season, ending a tradition that had been a fixture of the resort's lobby since 1999.
A 27-Year Tradition Comes to a Close
Every holiday season since 1999, Walt Disney World Resort's pastry team had constructed a towering, walk-through gingerbread structure inside the Victorian-style lobby of Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. The display drew guests who made a point of stopping by to see the structure, purchase handmade gingerbread treats and holiday pastries sold directly from inside, and photograph the elaborate seasonal installation.
The house went missing during the 2025 holiday season as the Grand Floridian lobby underwent active renovations, including the installation of The Perch, the resort's new birdcage-shaped lobby bar. Most guests assumed the absence was a temporary concession to the construction work.
That assumption turned out to be wrong. On June 24, theme park journalist Scott Gustin reported that Disney had officially confirmed the life-size Gingerbread House would not be returning.
What Will Replace It
Rather than the towering life-size structure guests had come to expect, Walt Disney World Resort's pastry artists will create miniature gingerbread displays for the Grand Floridian lobby and other Central Florida Disney Resort hotels. Disney has not yet released details about what those displays will look like, where they will be located, or how many resort properties will receive them. Additional information is expected later this year.
One question the change leaves unanswered is what will happen to the handmade holiday treats that guests traditionally purchased directly from inside the Gingerbread House. Disney has not confirmed whether those items will be available elsewhere in the lobby during the 2026 holiday season.
Broader 2026 Holiday Plans at Walt Disney World
The Gingerbread House news arrived on the same day Disney released a wide-ranging set of holiday announcements for the 2026 season. The resort's holiday programming runs Nov. 13, 2026, through Jan. 6, 2027, and includes the return of Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party at Magic Kingdom, Disney Jollywood Nights at Disney's Hollywood Studios — expanded to 15 nights for its largest season yet — and the EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays from Nov. 27 through Dec. 30.
Festive decorations, seasonal food offerings, character appearances, and holiday entertainment are scheduled across all four theme parks, Disney Springs, and resort hotels throughout the season.
Fan Reaction
The confirmation drew a swift response from Disney fans and theme park communities online. For many longtime visitors, stopping by the Grand Floridian to see the Gingerbread House and pick up a seasonal treat had become as much a part of an annual holiday trip as visiting the parks themselves. The structure's combination of pastry artistry and interactive retail made it a one-of-a-kind experience that guests could not replicate anywhere else on Disney property.
Whether the new miniature displays will satisfy guests who grew up with the full-size structure remains to be seen. Disney has indicated more details about the replacement displays will be shared ahead of the holiday season.
