"Deadliest Catch" Deckhand Todd Meadows Dies at 25 While Filming
Todd Meadows died February 25 while filming season 22 of Deadliest Catch. He was 25 years old. The cameras were rolling when it happened.
Meadows worked as a deckhand on the Aleutian Lady. He was the newest crew member featured on the Discovery Channel reality series about crab fishing in Alaska. A GoFundMe confirmed he died while "crabbing out on Alaskan waters."
Deadline reported the Aleutian Lady was the last boat from the upcoming season still at sea when Meadows died. Filming wrapped shortly after.
Captain Rick Shelford has been on the show since 2023. He called it the "most tragic day in the history of the Aleutian Lady" and said Meadows' work ethic earned everyone's respect right away. His smile was contagious. The sound of his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs is something the crew will carry with them always.
Discovery Channel said his death was "a devastating loss" and their hearts are with his loved ones, crewmates, and the entire fishing community.
Meadows leaves behind a wife and three children.
The Show Has Killed Before
Deadliest Catch premiered in 2005. The series follows king crab fishermen working the Bering Sea in Alaska. The title references how dangerous the job is. It's one of the deadliest professions in America for a reason.
In 2019, a boat set to appear on Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove capsized in Newport, Oregon. Three fishermen died. Joshua Porter, 50. James Lacy, 48. Stephen Biernacki, 50.
Porter's friend told The Oregonian he'd planned for that trip to be his last on the boat because he thought the crew was inexperienced. "Those were his words," Celeste Paranto said. "It's very sad. Because he was a responsible person. He went out on the trip and never returned home."
The fishermen had asked the U.S. Coast Guard for help crossing the Yaquina Bay bar shortly before 10 p.m. because of high seas. The boat capsized with all three men onboard. A Coast Guard crew saw it happen and launched a search and rescue mission while fighting 12 to 14-foot waves.
What Crab Fishing Actually Is
Long hours in freezing temperatures. Slippery decks. Heavy equipment swinging around. Massive waves crashing over boats. Constant risk of hypothermia. That's the job.
Discovery Channel has been filming fishermen risking their lives for crab for nearly 20 years. Four people connected to the show have died while working. Todd Meadows is the newest name on that list. The network released a statement about devastation and hearts going out to families. Season 22 will premiere later this year.
The show is literally named for how deadly the work is. It’s not just a catchy title. It's reality. February 25 proved this.
His mother has asked the network not to air any of the footage from Meadow's accident, but it is unclear if Discovery will honor the request.
May Todd Meadows's family find some sort of solace during this extremely difficult time.
