Carrot Top Is Recovering in Las Vegas After Reported Suicide Attempt

Prop comedian Carrot Top, born Scott Thompson, was hospitalized on September 18 following a reported suicide attempt. The longtime Las Vegas headliner is awake, breathing without medical assistance, and recovering, his representative confirmed Sunday. Thompson has held a residency at the Luxor Hotel and Casino for more than 20 years and is one of the most recognizable figures on the Las Vegas Strip.

His Representative’s Statement

Representative Jami Schlicher released a statement Sunday on behalf of Thompson and his family: “Mr. Thompson is recovering in the hospital and is receiving the care and support he needs. His family and those closest to him are deeply grateful for the concern, prayers and respectfully ask for privacy.” No details about the circumstances of his hospitalization were disclosed, and no further public statements were expected from the family immediately.

How He Is Doing

Thompson, 61, was awake and breathing on his own as of Sunday, September 20. His representative said he had been “joking with the medical staff” and was “moved by fan messages” from people describing how his comedy had helped them through difficult periods in their lives. Family members were present at the hospital throughout his recovery, and no timeline for discharge or return to performing was announced.

The response from fans was immediate and widespread. Messages from people who said his performances had been a source of laughter during some of the hardest stretches of their lives circulated across social media in the hours following news of his hospitalization, and his representative said those messages reached him.

Allegations Filed Days Before Hospitalization

Days before his hospitalization, 25-year-old Zachary Defazio filed a sworn declaration in Broward County, Florida, supporting an existing federal lawsuit against Thompson filed in August by singer Brian Evans, a former opening act for Thompson's Las Vegas show.

In the declaration, Defazio described himself as "a second independent victim" and alleged that Thompson met him on the dating app Grindr in 2021, when Defazio was 19, using an anonymous photo before the two met in person in Winter Park, Florida. Defazio further alleged that Thompson supplied him with alcohol while he was under the legal drinking age and engaged in sexual conduct with him on an occasion when he was too intoxicated to consent.

None of the allegations have been proven in court, and no official connection between the filing and Thompson's hospitalization has been confirmed.

His Career and Las Vegas Residency

Thompson first appeared on the national stage through Star Search in 1991 and spent the following decades building a career around prop comedy, physical humor, and elaborate stage productions featuring his signature red hair and theatrically oversized gags. His style, centered on objects and visual punchlines, distinguished him from the stand-up comedians who dominated the genre and gave his live shows a circus-like scale that became his calling card.

He secured a residency at the Luxor Hotel and Casino’s Atrium Showroom in November 2005 and has performed there ever since, accumulating one of the longest-standing entertainment residencies in Las Vegas history. His contract with the Luxor extends through 2030. Following his hospitalization, MGM Resorts canceled his Friday night performance and his Saturday show. The company expressed relief as recovery updates emerged over the weekend. Beyond his live work, Thompson also made television appearances on Scrubs, Family Guy, and the Peacock comedy series Hacks.
