Britney Spears Arrested for Alleged DUI in California
Britney Spears was arrested by the California Highway Patrol in Ventura County late Wednesday, March 4, on suspicion of driving under the influence. The Grammy-winning pop star, 44, was taken into custody around 3 a.m. and released just after 6 a.m., according to inmate records from the Ventura County Sheriff's Office.
While law enforcement did not specify formal charges at the time of the arrest, TMZ reported the incident was DUI-related. A court hearing has been scheduled for May 4.
Her Representative Responds
A spokesperson for Spears called the incident an "unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable" in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney's life," the rep said.
The statement added that Spears' sons would be spending time with her and that loved ones were working on a plan "to set her up for success for well-being."
A Pattern of Legal Incidents
The DUI arrest is the latest in a string of run-ins with law enforcement since Spears' conservatorship was terminated by a California judge in November 2021 — ending a legal arrangement that had been in place since 2008.
In July 2023, Spears claimed she was struck by security personnel for NBA player Victor Wembanyama at a Las Vegas restaurant. Las Vegas police later declined to file charges, saying surveillance footage showed Spears had inadvertently hit herself after her hand was pushed away.
That fall, California Highway Patrol officers pulled Spears over twice — once in September for speeding and again in October for crossing double-yellow lines. On both occasions, she reportedly did not have her driver's license with her, saying it had been left with her security detail.
In May 2024, police and paramedics were called to the Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles following a reported incident involving Spears and her then-boyfriend. She later left the property with security without further incident.
Life After the Conservatorship
Spears' conservatorship, overseen primarily by her father Jamie Spears, was in place for 13 years. It was put in place in 2008 following a very public breakdown when Spears was 26. When it ended in 2021, it was seen as a major legal and personal victory for the singer and the #FreeBritney movement that had campaigned on her behalf.
Since then, however, her life has remained turbulent and heavily scrutinized by the media.
Musical Hiatus and Catalog Sale
On the music front, Spears has largely stepped away from recording and performing. Her last studio album, Glory, came out in 2016. She has released two collaborative singles since — "Hold Me Closer" with Elton John in 2022 and "Mind Your Business" with Will.i.am in 2023 — but has not announced a new solo album.
Her last major tour was the Piece of Me Tour in 2018, which followed the conclusion of her long-running Las Vegas residency. The tour reportedly grossed $54.3 million across North America and Europe.
In January, Spears posted on Instagram that she would "never" perform in the United States again, citing "extremely sensitive reasons." She expressed hope of eventually performing in the UK and Australia on Instagram, potentially alongside one of her sons.
"But I hope to be sitting on a stool with a red rose in my hair, in a bun, performing with my son… in the UK and Australia very soon," Spears wrote on an Instagram post. "He's a huge star, and I'm so humbled to be in his presence!!! Godspeed, little man!!!"
The following month, it was reported that Spears sold her music catalog to publisher Primary Wave for an undisclosed amount.
What Happens Next
With a court date set for May 4 and her representative publicly acknowledging the need for "overdue change," the coming weeks may prove to be a turning point. Whether Spears will take steps toward a more stable chapter — or whether this incident becomes another headline in a long and painful public narrative — remains to be seen.
