The 2026 Actor Awards, newly renamed from the Screen Actors Guild Awards, offered fresh clarity in one of the most unpredictable Oscar races in years.

Held on March 1 and streamed on Netflix, the ceremony solidified several front-runners while delivering at least one surprise that reshaped the best actor conversation.

Jessie Buckley for “Hamnet,” Amy Madigan for “Weapons” and Sean Penn for “One Battle After Another” strengthened their awards momentum with wins in their respective categories. The biggest shake-up came from Michael B. Jordan, whose victory for “Sinners” disrupted an ultra-competitive best actor field.

Because the awards are voted on by actors, who make up the largest branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the ceremony is widely viewed as a reliable predictor of Oscar success.

Harrison Ford Reflects on a Long Career

One of the night’s most memorable moments came when Harrison Ford accepted the life achievement award at age 83.

After an introduction by Woody Harrelson, Ford appeared visibly moved as he took the stage.

“I feel incredibly grateful for this kind attention,” Ford said. “But to be clear, I also am quite humbled. I’m in a room of actors, many of whom are here because they are nominated to receive a prize for their amazing work, while I’m here to receive a prize for being alive.”

He added, “It’s a little weird to be getting a lifetime achievement award at the half point of my career. It’s a little early, isn’t it? I’m still a working actor.”

Ford reflected on his early struggles, saying, “In my third year of college, I was a little lost. I was failing at school. I felt isolated and alone. And then I found the company of people putting on plays. People I once thought were misfits and geeks turned out to be my people.”

He thanked George Lucas and Steven Spielberg for “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones,” and ended tearfully by praising his “extraordinary” wife, Calista Flockhart.

“This is very encouraging,” Ford quipped.

Michael J. Fox Makes Rare Appearance

Michael J. Fox made a rare public appearance during the ceremony’s opening “I Am an Actor” segment.

Reflecting on advice from a former teacher, Fox said, “Before I left school and moved from Canada to LA, a teacher of mine told me, ‘Fox, you’re not going to be cute forever.’ So I said, ‘Maybe just long enough, sir.’ ”

He spoke about landing “Family Ties” after years of “dumpster diving,” and called meeting his wife, Tracy Pollan, “the biggest gift of my life.”

“And she gave me four gifts: Schuyler, Aquinnah, Esmé and Sam,” he said of his children. “Sometimes I like to remind them, ‘If it wasn’t for acting, you wouldn’t be here.’ ”

The appearance drew a standing ovation from the audience.

Emotional Tribute to Catherine O’Hara

The ceremony took a somber turn with the posthumous win for Catherine O’Hara for best actress in a comedy series for “The Studio.” O’Hara died January 30 of a pulmonary embolism.

Her co-star Seth Rogen accepted the award and delivered a heartfelt tribute.

“She really showed that you can be a genius and be kind, and one of those things does not have to come at the expense of the other in any way, shape, or form,” Rogen said.

He urged viewers to share her work with others, saying, “Tell the people as they are laughing, ‘That’s Catherine O’Hara, and we were lucky that we got to live in a world where she so generally shared her talents with us.’ ”

Several stars in attendance were visibly emotional during the tribute.

Amy Madigan’s Comedic Moment

Amy Madigan provided one of the night’s most charming speeches after winning best supporting actress for playing Aunt Gladys in “Weapons.”

“It’s such an honor to be here. I’ve been doing this a long-ass time, and I’ve never been nominated by the SAG committee,” Madigan said.

She then examined the Actor Awards statue and joked, “It’s like when you were little and you had Barbie and then you had Ken, and you whipped off those drawers and you said, ‘Ken has nothing!’ I never quite understood that. Anyway, I really am digressing. I apologize!”

The moment drew some of the loudest laughs of the evening.

Red Carpet Highlight

Teyana Taylor may not have won best supporting actress, but she captured attention on the red carpet alongside her 5-year-old daughter, Rue Rose Shumpert.

As Taylor posed for photographers, Rue adjusted the train of her mother’s dress and later joined her for photos. The pair exchanged hugs and playful poses, becoming one of the night’s most talked-about duos.

A Night of Surprises and Signals

The ceremony, hosted by Kristen Bell, ran over its scheduled two-hour runtime, weighed down by extended movie montages and a recurring backstage ping-pong segment.

Still, the emotional speeches, surprise wins and heartfelt tributes delivered the moments awards watchers were waiting for.

With the Oscars approaching, the Actor Awards appear to have sharpened the focus on several key races while reminding viewers that unpredictability remains part of Hollywood’s biggest season.
